Yes. Product teams are mostly mediocre. I wish I get to work with excellent PMs someday. I'm sure a lot of them are out there.

Very true, we have an amazing product head but the people who are working under have no clue about the current product.

Hi , this post is intended to be a disclaimer to anyone who is planning to join Yubi. A lot of things are happening here that show some signs of an impending layoff

1) Several senior folks in tech and product have quit. Also there is no replacement hiring planned for them. Several projects are also getting shelved as a result.

2) there were several open roles a few weeks back and almost all of them are on hold as of now across all depts( tech , business , ops)

3) rampant cost cutting. The lunch options have been reduced to just 1 dal , 1 veg , rice and chapati.  Snacks have been removed too.


Because of several folks quitting in less than 6 months and no replacement hiring , load has increased tremendously on existing members who are themselves trying to leave. 

People have serious doubts on whether any hike or bonus will be given or not this year.

I feel like startups have unreasonable and unnecessary self induced pressure at times. I am working as an APM at a gate management startup and all I feel is pressurized even though the release gets delayed whether due to faulty implementation or dev or qa or requirement change from business side which the PM has no control over. While all this is happening you are left to wonder where did you lack? Was it at Product Management or at Project Management because clearly both are not happening properly.

It's weird how so little at times is in your control and yet how all the blame you have to take because primarily it was your job to think it all through.

Do you get some request for urgent super high priority requirements with CEO looped in, but when you ask for some details, business team do not share anything for days. And suddenly, one day again everyone runs asking for delivery.

I work as a Product manager at a series A well funded startup.
This company is run by a solo founder/CEO.

This is a wannabe tech and product startup that does not care about their product at all. The internal review meetings get 5 minutes on product and 55 minutes on business and operations on a good day!

All they care about is how to run operations and tech just works on automation instead of building the product for the end user. Every OKR cycle runs for two months where OKRs are set for product but we end up building internal tools because things get "re-prioritised" and operations "can not miss targets".

The worst part is that the strategy changes every 2 months and every week, the CEO keeps adding new "wants". Almost like a baby seeing shiny new toys.
At this stage, the product has become a mess with no identity at all!

This baby always says "But is that even do-able" acts critical and tries to seem smart in front of their employees while lying to the investors and board every other week that we are a tech and product company.

I don't know if this happens at other startups in India. 

Would love to hear what y'all have experienced.

You sound like a tech bro, who thinks that only tech runs the world. Huge companies like Tata, reliance etc are built on solid operations and business insights.  
  
 Tech is enabler, if the founder is smart with business and operations, most likely he will make a good business, and unless you start valuing things beyond tech also, you will keep hopping jobs and cribbing why people don’t value you.

I am a 2022 grad and 1yr into my corporate life and I have stopped liking software engineering. I took software engineering as a career because for the love of it but after experiencing the office politics and constant mundane work I have lost my zeal.

We are always caught between the CTO and the Manager not being on the same page and redoing a lot of our work. For the past 1yr we have been migrating the same stuff to different platforms. No innovative work, no recognition for good work.

Is this normal in the corporate world?

Also I am thinking of taking a break as I want to focus on my health. Is it a good idea to take a break now for 3-5 months and then get back to working again?

The job market has dried up for senior product roles. Do you think the situation will improve soon? What's your overall outlook of product management as a career beyond 10 years? Do you see yourself doing this for another decade?

Asking mostly from a supply and demand point of view. Also, has seen that the role is becoming more and more vague and replaceable.

Context: Leading a 6 membered product team in a series B funded company. Managing the ceo/cpo opinion differences, moving to wfo from remote, high work pressure and too much reporting. I have been working with series A, series B companies throughout my career.

To people with 10+ years in product management, what's your outlook for the future?

I'm a product manager myself and I've been noticing this mentality.

Founders of pre-PMF stage companies, having raised tons of money in the bull market in a last couple of years, have hired tons of resources with no clarity and vision whatsoever.

They continue to ignore they're building a product nobody wants. They barely talk to users. On top of it, they hire Product Managers thinking it's a silver bullet and will solve PMF issues.

It's founders responsibility to figure out PMF and not anybody's else. You need to get in the weeds and not throw money at problems.

It just doesn't end there. These companies with average talent pool and the kind of culture that sets it top-down because of these average founders, expect PMs to own everything and fix everything. Everybody from Tech to Marketing shrugs off from the responsibility expect PMs to tell what needs to be done. This chutiya mindset of 'sit and wait' until a PM tells let breeds more inefficiency as output becomes slower as nobody is incentivised to think and take decisions. Also, everybody enjoys doing what are being told because no consequences if things blow up.

Hire competent people across functions and get involved in product building. It's already too late to fix it if this resonates with you.

Unfortunately this is the reality in most companies in the world. It's not just pre-PMF startups.  
  
 That's just how things are in corporate. 
  
 I was lucky to be working in a pre-PMF startup where engineers took more responsibility. And they themselves planned out the tech debt and optimised APIs/queries, etc.  
  
 And I know I'm not gonna find such set of engineers ever again.  
  
 Best thing to do is to make peace with it and do whatever you can to make the best product 😀

1. High pressure on timelines- business and top management shits on you if you don’t deliver on time
2. No power to control the outcome- engineers don’t listen to you neither does the design or analytics team, you end up begging for resources
3. Too much politics- business or a senior PM can steal your bandwidth anytime
4. Lack of recognition- if it succeeds business did it, if it fails it is product teams fault (engg never gets blamed for shit)

I believe Product Management is a really toxic role

I feel my product head is okayish (never handled team of 20 plus pms). He doesn’t listen. Changes prod roadmap planning every quarter. Business doesn’t trust him anymore. So the pressure of dealing with business directly comes on junior level pms. 

What can I do here? Who should I approach to get this resolved?
