Flat/Room hunting in new City, Need help

Hi there,

TLDR; Please guide experienced gv folks how do you search and go about looking for place to stay in a new city and what things to keep in mind?

I am trying for opportunities outside my current location. I have no idea about searching independently for a place to stay whilst first time in a city. Also till date since start of my job I found place to stay with my friends or college peers who were in nearby locations luckily.Include the 2-3 years of COVID wfh also so didn't get chance to relocate outside.

But now since I am out of touch with many and also don't want to depend on others as they might have other commitments and couldn't be there everytime.I want to be able to find a place on my own.

Thanks.

I search for PGs in that area first (mostly coz they are set up generally in a good location)and see if there are any nearby gyms, bus stop, and restaurants. If I feel the location is good, then I search for to-let boards in and around that street, find a house that suits me.

  1. Use platforms like magicbricks and housing to find brokers. BUT don't go by the listings they show on the apps. Most of them are either fake or brokers just list good looking flats to get customers.

  2. Look for convenient and safe areas. If you're unmarried, chances are high that you'll not get flats in family based residential areas.

  3. There will be same flats with multiple agents and these agents will try their best to talk smack about other agents. I'd suggest go with your gut, take your time and understand the deal.

  4. Check for electricity, water, leaks, connectivity (not wifi but phone coverage). Then understand the price, what's included, what's not. Negotiate the price (must).

All the best

You can also check 99 acres. I found some rental property there.

Also how to proceed with rent agreement, verify which one is genuine and not fraudster?? I have heard few cases were people were duped some amount by scamster in guise of owner.Sometimes brokers also took money fraudulently without giving access to flat.
