Frivolous Doubts: Internship Edition

Best if I ask them, rather than assuming things!

  • When you crack SDE Internship(MAANG types) at a big tech giant, do they give you general work or place you in a department that is along the lines of your projects and/or OSS contributions. Say I've got intermediate mobile engineering skills under my belt, will that be my department for the duration of the internship or I'll be expected to code to other 'alien-to-me' parts of the codebase. -What degree of skill proficiency do they expect. I'm sure I'm not founding any companies single handedly but still, for the heck of it: how skilled would you need to be to survive interning there daily?

P.S.A. -> I can you feel like being mean to me in the comments, this is who you're being mean to :

Generally they don’t care what you work on, mostly you’re randomly allotted to teams where the interns are needed. I interned at FAANG 2 places, both places where I worked I had no previous experience in the field/tech

+1 they don't care what you already know.

Pretty low expectations tbh. So have as much fun as you can.

You will have priority when they hire for freshers because you have more context.

Just know that hiring depends also on the macro environment which can make it more competitive to convert to a PPO.

So, work the hardest and deliver things fast. Chill once you’re on the inside. It really is a chill life.

You need to fuck up pretty badly to not succeed. If you’re doing okayish then you’re good to go.
