I graduated recently with a computer science related degree and since my  childhood I told my parents that I will be an ias officer and prepare for upsc , iam telling the same till the last 2 day's, my parents got there hopes up alot and they are searching institutes to join me and all stuff for the past 3 years but yesterday I told them that I want to pursue masters and go into tech field . They are extremely upset and there's no communication for the past 2 days and everyone around including other family members trying to convince me to go for ias  coaching . What to do ?

Advice to the 20 yr old choosing his career

Guys, I recently switched to a startup that is operating fully remotely, where I am working as a software engineer. This is something that I consciously chose as I personally liked working from home. I have 2 years of experience in this field. In my earlier job, I was working from the office in mumbai, so I have lived in the suburbs of mumbai for around 1.5 years. I am turned 25 just a few months back.

I come from a small town in Rajasthan. I do have a bsnl fibre connectivity at home, which gives good enough internet connectivity as well. Living in a small town and with parents is great. I save almost all of my salary. 

Now, here comes the confusion - being early in my career, i feel like I should live in the city, like bangalore, explore more things, but since I already lived in mumbai, to be very honest I didn't liked it to that extent as I am not the party guy, and too many people make it more worse, traffic I am not even considering. 

I am kind of very simple. Home to office and office to home, on weekends maybe go to temples and explore some places around. I also have food choices, which makes it more difficult to survive. Like I am pure vegetarian and don't even eat onion/garlic, nobody in the home actually eats it. 

No offence to anyone, but  I feel extremely uncomfortable when i am asked to eat at restaurants where non-veg is surved during company offsites and all. 

Now, just for the context, it's not that I never lived  away from family. Actually, I am staying away from my family from very early school days, like 8th/9th standard. And somehow, I managed it all during all those years. 

That is one of the reasons that makes me feel as if I should spend more time with my parents.

What would be your advice for me so that I don't leave behind in my career and at the same time live a balanced and happy life.

Also, considering my context, which city would you recommend me to relocate to? Or should I not even think about it?

At young age you should focus only on 2 things, career and money.  
  
 Career: Try to learn as much as possible in whatever you do. Take initiative and show enthusiasm for anything new. Anyone can code, but people who take initiative and has the ability to learn new things quickly are the one who make it big. Build a good relationship with your colleagues. Your network is your networth.  
  
 Try to get as much clarity in life as possible. Talk to seniors, learn about their journey, why they made certain decisions. Trust me having clarity in life as to what you wanna do in life is a cheatcode.  
  
 Money: No matter how much you make, you can always save money. Invest that money into index funds. Investing early on in life will put you years ahead of your friends. Compounding is real. Here's a simple rule you can follow: 50:20:30. Spend 50% on basic needs, 20% on your wants and invest the rest 30%.  
  
 Don't buy expensive things just to show off. Literally no one cares.

Hey Folks. Here for some advice…

Context: I’m 37. MBA+Engg Grad working. Big Blr Startup. Good Role in Biz. Married (Started dating 12 years back & then got married). 

I’m an extrovert/fairly social (Mostly hang out/around other people/friends around a similar life stage - age/work). Most of my friends from School, Engg & B-School are all over the place (we meet once in a year types), no one in Bangalore. Hanging around with people at work is not something I like to do more than once in a month. My wife, on the other hand, has a good set of friends, with whom I hang out quite regularly (guys & girls). 

For a while now, I’ve been thinking of investing some time into making friends/building relationships outside of my social circle (Not that I’m looking to cheat on my wife, but then sometimes it’s good to hang out with people who aren’t your partner’s friends or are already part of your existing work/social circle). 

In short - I’d like to meet unconnected new people. And I’m realizing that at my age, it’s not so easy to do so without seeming creepy.

About a year back, I met an ex-colleague (28F) over drinks (She was in town and asked if we could meet) - Super attractive and smart. It has 12+ years since I’ve randomly met anyone from the opposite sex alone for a meal/conversation (outside of a work meeting). At first, it was super awkward - uncomfortable pauses, loss of words, asking dumb questions, etc. Luckily, in a bit, alcohol kicked in and then it got much better… We still text & meet if we’re in each other’s cities with some time to spare. That’s when it hit me that I was good at making small talk, but have no idea what to talk about when it’s someone who’s some 10+ years younger. Seems like another generation (which it probably is)… While I felt so, I must also admit, I had a great time to be honest - the conversations were energizing/different and to be honest, a tad exciting too.

A little about myself: 22, just graduated Btech CS from tier 1 college, got placed in a few tier 1 companies, baniya (relevant), and good at engineering in general ( won several actually honourable awards internationally, from government of India, some IIT random techfests, etc). Point of telling this being to get some credibility for the readers so that they don’t take me as a young dumb overconfident 20yr old. (maybe I am?)
I really want to earn money, probably in my genes, my father wants the same for me. My dad has a decent wholesale business (around 1cr per year profit) and I don’t mind moving in it as well. It’s recommended to stay sometime in corporate to learn the nitty gritties of life and other aspects. I don’t mind that either.
Personally, I want to get into entrepreneurship, but again it’s easier said that done, how to start, idea, implementation and everything else it’s just the tip of the iceberg. People of my age (some of them being close to me as well) have started their ventures and have got funding upto 500k USD and it makes me jls.
I’ll be probably joining an MNC and will stay for around 1 year and then see how it goes.
I’ll be really helpful if fellow grapeviners can shed some words of wisdom on how to go on here to a startup/business/high earning journey?

I recently worked at a startup and it was terrible. 

To be honest, I still worked at one of the better ones but it just sucked. 

Some of the clear downsides I see 

- Survival mode leads to chaos. You can be treated anyway and asked to leave whenever  even though you left big opportunities to be here 
- Brand loss to find next job (Big problem)
- Trying to make you feel unworthy(Doesn't bother me but I have seen people lose self confidence)
- Loss of opportunity to build real skills like building sustainable teams for the long run

I think over all working at a startup especially early teams is a losing proposition. Do it only if -
 - you know the founders/team well 
- you know the industry and market well and it is a bet you personally believe in
- you are secure enough in life that if you go back to your job, you will easily get employed 


For middle class kids, startups are the worst bets one can take.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Hey folks, I'm a newbie in corporate town, currently in a bit slow paced work environment at an international bank, in their analytics team. I'm right out of IIT Bombay, and this was my college placement, the work culture and work life balance is really good, BUT I'm just 22 and I want a big learning curve. And ofcourse the pay is average (below avg but median as per IITB placements go).
I need advice from who've been in town on how do I not overthink and plan out stuff for a better learning experience and $$ ofcourse.

As you can see I almost everytimg doubled my compensation when I switched my companies. But there are reasons to stay at a company as well. If you are learning and are able to handle different problems at scale, stay. When you feel stuck, leave and look for better opportunities. I have never switched job to get more money. I love CS. I have been coding since 15 years. What made me switch was either bad managers, uninteresting problems not visibility of learning and growth.
