Joined initially as a Product Specialist , I was genuinely interested in a techno commercial role . Slowly moved into PM and now leading a team of PMs and Product Specialists . It was a natural progression and I have thoroughly enjoyed so far .

Became a founder. PM is like another job role that founders have to take care of pretty much. 
  
 I did like the role but being bootstrapped really limits your options. Very difficult to manage.

This is just a rant. I am so done with Walmart. It's my first job. I joined a little over two years ago, off campus hiring. I've been moved 3 teams over the course of last 2 years and 4 months. 2 teams in the first 1 year. I was extremely scared because I was not learning anything. My manager then was unreachable because he was managing a huge team. I used to travel from my hometown to bangalore every single month to reach out to him and get him to notice me since we were all still working from home then. 

Thankfully later, I have been moved to a team were there was consistent work. The same begging for tasks continued, after about 3-4 months after doing nothing, work started coming in. Small stuff, writing test cases, CCM cleanups,  CRQ creation and stuff, again took it to my (new) manager ans he said since I was new to the team and to get me used to the process and get a hang of things I am being given these tasks(fair enough!) . And then eventually some good features. My team in India has just 2 people other than me, one of them who is a TL is one of the meanest people ever. If I ask a question he will laugh at my face and say you should know this by now. They are not tech related questions which I can google and get answer to. This created a fear in me, I do my own research and only after I know that I have no other way of getting an answer I reach out to them. My US team is practically unreachable because of the timings. They don't work a minute after 6pm. There have been times when I scheduled calls at 3am 4am so that I can get some help. 11pm 12am meetings are common. 

After about 1 year of learning I thought I am able to finally finish tasks without a lot of help from people. And last month during the "auto promotion" my manager rejected my promotion- reason: not proactive enough. I was blindsided, I was not given an opportunity explain my side of the coin. He has no context of my work, I practically have 2 managers sprint planning and work stuff with my US manager and other things likr promotion and appraisal with my manager here in India. My manager in India said he has taken this decision based on the feedback from my stakeholders - TL and manager in US

I have no hopes from my TL but I was surprised my US manager gave a negative feedback because he was in the loop regarding my efforts to learn and deliver tasks. I have been trying to schedule a one on one with him since the promotions happened. Every time he cancels it last minute. 

I'm done. I have decided to look for opportunities else where. I have a few interviews scheduled. But no time to prepare curtsy horrible WLB at Walmart. Well, what do I except? Not much really. Just wanted to rant it out to someone I guess.

No visibility and recognition
Ruined mental health and peace of mind

About six months back I reached out to someone who connected me with hiring manager (BU head) who after speaking with me and my interest in product manager rolled me an offer and I joined the startup at PM. 
From past 3-4 months I have been working on a BI/Data project which is quite fun and I have been enjoying the project. Today he asked me if i want to do data stuff since I am enjoying and liking the role. 

The caveat is I’ll probably have to change my designation from Product Manager to Business Intelligence Team. 

Wanted to know your thoughts on it and whether to make this change?

Its been 8 months since I have joined my current company. I have previously worked in a B2C PM role. My current company is a data product company and provides services to US companies to send digital and physical notifications to end users. My previous role was much more structured for PM than here. First of all, as business is US based, PM role is more of an order taker. Further, as engineers are experienced, they are not as cooperative as my previous org. Hence, I am in typical PM struggle, responsible for nothing but accountable for everything. Should I build my hard skills like learning sql/analytics or should I work on soft skills like influencing stakeholders etc. 
I have 7 years of experience in program management role and pure 2 years of PM experience.

What made it worst? The pay, the culture, or your manager?

What's the worst company you have worked for?

ICICI Bank, they had a strict sign in timing policy where if you are late to corporate office, half day salary would be cut, It would be reversed only when manager approves. The sign out time used to be 5.15pm, but you would be made to sit till 8 pm by most of the managers even if your job is done for the day. A sign out at 6 pm used to be called as half day by most of the managers. 
 I heard now they donot have this dictatorial policy.

Data Analyst

I know Grapevine is full of young and ambitious people that either planning to get into Product or are already working as a PM. I don’t aim to discourage any of you. Moreover, if you need tips to break into Product I would be happy to help you.

I personally feel that knowing what you are doing is going to doom is better than normalizing it.

So I will convey my experience in simple words, how I hated every single day of it, why did I still stick around for 4 years, why product decisions are random political bullshit, why you should not let anything that happens get under your skin and affect your morale. Finally, few words for sociopathic Head of Products.

Lesson #1: Go through all stages of grief at once. Accept that product culture is broken and accept that it will not get better. Finally, you can’t fix it or improve it.

Lesson #2: Ratings are political bullshit. 
I can tell you the years I was rated worse I was probably working harder and better at my job. It just depends on the results you get in the last month before ratings and whether your DOP is vocal for you.

Lesson #3: Last piece of advice: do not let your Product years lower your self esteem or sense of self worth.

Also, some words for sociopathic Head of Products. F’ you.

You Must Get Out - My Experience of 4 Years In Product

Heavily second this. I’m a tech focus generalist who stumbled upon PMing after multiple startup exits. Absolutely bonkers role with no role definition, metric ownership, impact driving. Anyone who disagrees, is lying to themselves. What I can define PM in Indian / many valley based companies with Indian founders -> glorified bhains charane wala.
