What works for me is telling them I am not comfortable sharing my current salary so early in the process. If they further insist I ask them the salary range for this role and my expectations. If they are still insisting and not sharing what you ask then politely decline the process. Remember it's a two way process.

Absolutely , its a 2 way process but mostly its the smaller consultancies with a good opportunity denying to share information.  
 Same thing coming from a company recruiter is a big no.

 Ask their budget and say will tell if it works for me. 
  
 In most cases they have given a number less than my current, so  they should be embarrassed

I have been applying for jobs, and every time I get a recruiter call, they ask me for my current СТС.
Is it ok to tell them the current CTC at the very first call?
Asking this because, in my current company, the budget was more but they gave me hike based on my previous CTC, because I had disclosed my current CTC before.
Also, how do I tackle the question how much is my expected salary? Is it a good idea to tell them right away? 
Asking this because what if they have bigger budget but still end up paying how much I asked for. 

PS: I am new to all of this, please help me how to tackle these questions.

I got a call for an APM role from one of the companies which did sound pretty sketchy and the recruiter was started bullying me into answering questions, when I asked to know more about the role. The recruiter was extremely unprofessional, and obviously the conversation was nowhere great. They however, did go ahead and sent me the JD and other links, etc to fill in and apply for the job. Mind you, I hadn't applied for the job. 🥲
It just was a pretty sour conversation which had left me in an uncertain situation. Any similar experiences?

Weird recruiter experiences

Asked for my expected CTC. I answered and they weren't happy with it. Said they could only give at 40% increment of current CTC and then asked for my current CTC. After hearing my current CTC they said I shouldn't be earning this much and that I was obviously making it up. Then asked to send over my salary payslip which I refused. Basically the HR started being extremely rude at this point stating that I was being unprofessional. I asked their salary budget for the role which they refused to answer. Then I asked if they were willing to hire me for a lower CTC which she instantly agreed and said she knew I was reasonable and I shouldn't have lied about my CTC. I then said good luck finding a candidate for that amount and hung up.

Having almost  6yrs experience with single digit salary 😭 every friend and colleague are making a killing every recruiter I speak to just offer x% over last CTC but not the amount I ask stating budget issue. This is taking a toll on my mental health unable to focus on up skilling / working in current org plz help not sure what to do.

Stuck at low CTC and low confidence

Had the first (exploration) call with my would-be boss and HR lead to figure out which role I would fit in. Company is an MNC startup, best culture ive heard of, lots of friends working there in different verticals etc. I usually dont reveal salary this early on but it was a very quick call and they asked about it and I felt like I had to this time to not come off as a snob or stuck up.

Chances are low and I am okay pushing back but Im paranoid about getting lowballed now. Any advice on how to better my chances in the upcoming rounds? Greatly appreciate any help

It depends on where you are in terms of the compensation spectrum. It can definitely lead to bias if your current salary is not on the higher side. 
  
 For too long, I have played this back and forth game of revealing salary and asking them for budget and frankly, it’s too tiring in Indian recruitment circles. 
  
 So, I have started just being honest from the beginning about my current pay & expectation and have seen recruiters be transparent about their budgets too. 
 Eventually if a company has to lowball they anyway would, but I am glad that I don’t have to exercise so much cognitive effort playing this game of riddles

Guys,
I have 8 years of IT experience out of which , 2.5 in azure. I got a call from Capegemni HR , saying there's an azure opening, asked for my current and expected CTC. I said the current is 7 LPA and expected is 20 LPA. It's a hybrid role with 3 days working from the office. She said it is not possible, Max they can give is 10-13. I am in Kerala,and have a baby under 1. I have to relocate if I get it. I don't think it is fair salary.

Is it ok if we don't tell when they're asking for our current salary based on which they will give max 100% if we perform exceptionally in the interview.

Or how can I deal this?

Let's CHANGE the tone of these conversations.

I always ask for their budget before I disclose mine. Enough people do this and it'll become the norm and gives you a fighting chance to safeguard against lowballing. 

Objection handling:
1. "Our budget is flexible depending on the role and experience" - counter - what role are you considering me for? What's the range for that role? - if they still deny that's bullshit, all companies even startups have a ceiling they've at least thought of
2. "Our hikes are fixed at 20-30%" - run. Or if you care about the co. try talking about market standards and fair pay
3. If they're being unreasonable and not giving any info, you say your compensation is confidential / not comfortable sharing it at this stage

Expected CTC - 1.2x Glassdoor/ambition box for business roles. Tech has levels.fyi. 
If they try to haggle at this stage itself, say you'd like to focus on the job fit and the opportunity and talk about compensation later which you believe would be open to discussion for the right candidate.

What is with Indian recruiters wanting to know your CTC as the very first step of hiring? And when asked to share the ctc range in which the role falls, they refuse to share.  So basically they just want to lowball candidates based on their current CTC and parity is a joke?
Now If a recruiter denies sharing the range for the role and insists on knowing my CTC, I run!  What are your thoughts?

As a recruiter, i have candidates asking me the payscale and i usually share them the compensation bands we have ...although in most cases we are told strictly not to tell the applicants ...however for me , i think it kinda makes my job much easier as they don't false expectations with the role or the salary ...neither i make them waste their time interviewing us ...saves a lot on both sides  
 My managers do expect me to have certain extra good profiles just to maintain our pipeline and show a good funnel of quality folks..but it does not work my way ...

Now that I am hiring, being on the other side has made me learn so many mistakes that I did/do (too)

1. Research (find at least 5 sites or people) about the position's playability
2. Ask that much, don't let imposter syndrome get better of you (I am guilty of this)
3. Do not share your current salary. If you are not desperately looking for a job, put your foot down. Give them an expectation (point 1)
4. Expected range - you want the higher number, HR sees the lower number
5. Don't over-follow up - I have had people reach out on multiple platforms within 24 hours of applying. Give a week's time.
6. Clean up your resume, no spelling mistakes. I have seen some very beautiful resumes *chumeshwari*
7. Sometimes, the recruiter doesn’t have all the answers; they are also not getting updates from teams. Please be patient

I make $50k USD in my current job and I am interviewing for a role in a US based startup. Their salary range for the role is mentioned to be $80-120k. 

My ideal target is $100k with them. Shall I inflate my current salary to let's say $75k in the hope of an easier negotiation to $100k? 

Can they do a background salary check in India? They are a tiny team of <10 folks. 

The above thought is obviously under the assumption that they can't verify my salary in India and/or would not be bothered about it. 

Is my assumption correct? And if yes then is my approach correct?

Currently in talks with the CEO of a small international startup (less than 10 total members spread across 4 countries). My existing profile is an exact match for what they are looking for in a candidate (they are implementation partners of my existing company's software). 
I am pretty close to closing it but now he wishes to know my existing salary. I tried to avoid sharing it but he wants to know it before quoting anything to me. 
I wish to get a huge raise (80-100%) since i will be moving from a known brand to an unknown startup with all the skills they need and more from Day 1. 
Any tips on how I can handle this situation?
