How to get rid of layoff fear and feel secure?
I work in a slowing industry (Ed-Tech!) in a generalist role (Project Management!) for half a decade now! You'd think I would be better positioned to deal with life! Heck, NO! This crippling feeling of insecurity or job loss always puts an extra stress on day to day life. I couldn't take any risks in terms of a house or a car or a big EMI purchase in life! What if I get laid off? Will this generalist role help in landing anything next? Do I need an MBA for that? Switching to any specialized roles will take extensive preparation with time being in short supply with family and kids! Seem to have been strangled in the startup world. Any cure for this? P.S : Sometimes thinking : Mommy sahi bolti thi. Govt job le leni chahiye thi. :D

Just my opinion, might be wrong too.
A soft layoff is mostly dependent on your manager and skip manager. When a company is in crunch, they always put lot of work pressure on everyone. To see who survives best. When a resource has width to cover a lot of ground, they always retain them. Like having multi-skill. When you are worth more 1-2 people at your range, you're mostly likely to be retained. I know this is unethical and unprofessional but that's the way company survives. As long as you're humble and ahead of the curve in terms of knowledge from your peers, you're mostly retained. You'll be given unreasonable expectations, but if you want to stick around, you've to deliver.
If that's not how you want to operate, finding a better opportunity is best.
If it's mass layoffs, you just have to pray to not be in that list.

Agree to your poiny Wholeheartedly. Exactly that's how the layoffs have happened. If people are fit to deliver more than the average lot, they'll be retained and shifted to different teams (in case of mass layoff or shutting down of a unit).
But this is a very unhealthy practice, you'd agree! How would you expect people to deliver when there baseline is safe!!
Haha, makes total sense, since you've stayed with the company for 5 years now.
It's a unfair world. That's the bitter truth. And our country has the toughest competition for any job role. We've some of the smartest people on the planet. We just can't outsmart once and move ahead, we've keep it doing again and again consistently till the day we call it enough and quit all of it.
Sadly, the rat race in corporates is very real.

I meant your fear for layoff and wanting something secure is because it's your first time. After two layoff you get used to used. It.
white collar employees have little or no skill gained during their employment. The skill is limited to just one activity not enough to go alone and survive. Or the skill is primarily works in one small area.
With a big working population there is nothing we can do we are at their mercy.
Many people break away and try something on their own. Most don't make it. Some manage to float. Very few make it.

No 1 - 5yrs isn’t a very long career journey to be bothered . I know there are guys all around the internet getting 50lakhs LPA with even 2-3yrs that will give you serious FOMO but trust your skills and knowledge , you will find out a way .
No 2 - Project Management is definitely a good role to be in , your industry is indeed slow but not dead . If you are indeed interested in Project Management , get a good PMI certification if you don’t have one and start connecting with people across industries
No 3 - You have the opportunity to move across jobs in Product Owner , Program Management or even Chief of staff . Do connect with people with these profiles and try to learn from their experience
Networking , Re-skilling and Self branding should be your mantra . Warna govt job ka preparation ki tayyari toh pura desh kar raha hai 😂😂
Take one of the job insurance schemes btw... It covers 3 months of pay... Few startups in this space

I never fear layoff I dont know why , I have saved enough amount 10L in MF , 10L in PF 2 L in gold bound 3-4 L have emergency fund , recently I took home home I bought my dream house in gudgaon(EMI 40k). working from past 10 years.
married have 1 kid.
so save your self financially frist , have family.
if I got layoff also I can survive at least 3 year without work .
I need your confidence man! How were you able to save for a home in Gurgaon? I managed to save only 1cr in 13 years and no assets. I fear layoff a lot

I would ask you to not take any EMIs in this job space and time. Also, slow death in Edtech is evident. A lot of people are now ditching the space.
Like how many people have commented here, save up for the future. Don't rely on foolish purchases.
So it is not you, just not you. A lot of us are feeling the same.
Unfortunately, this is not just our problem also.
Statistically, across the globe, this generation of people are actually struggling to buy a home.
I wonder how IT industry was in between 2010-2020. There was no word of layoff. People were doing their jobs boasting about IT industry salaries etc etc. But after this something happened to this IT industry and i think its because companies started to invest in India and started giving more salaries and hence a lot of "it might work" things started. The exact reason for layoffs is not known, it is no way AI, might be a bit of war scenes because of Russia and Ukraine, over hiring etc. so once this layoffs are done, now nobody knows whats gonna happpen next. If it happens obviously it would impact everyone. See YOY there will be 5-6% growth and increase in it means people are working hard. Aak people to work less harder, to work less on AI and other products so that we can still have this IT jobs for some years. Anyways 10yrs is minimum i can say. After that only god knows. Clear of your loans by then. I myself took 35L loan solely relying on my IT job. Future is uncertain but present is certain. So try to get maximum form it.

Keep growing or keep moving. Just keep that funda in life.
It sure is a fearful journey but from my experience, even if you get laid off it will hurt for a few days but your brain will gain every inch of confidence that you have in you and your skills and you will succeed in getting a better job with more value.
I know this could be a constant fear for some of us, but we have to overcome it by keeping ourselves updated with recent techs or skills required in your role. Not only will it give you a boost, you'll eventually feel less scared.

Well keep on applying for jobs and giving interviews some this experience save you from bad day at work
Priority 1 - Save more
Priority 2 - create emergency fund
Priority 3 - Second source of income where you can't be fired
Priority 4 - Be prepared for interviews
Priority 5 - Provide value to your employer
No unnecessary EMIs. Emis should not be > 50% salary
Try to earn more in a sustainable way. Increase your income by upskilling switching but don't switch too often

This is the policy of capitalism... This system will create unemployment and fear to keep you down always so that they can exploit you. In this way they control the middle class people and make rich people richer. This for all of us and not only for you. Every time we are struggling to live a quality life and something is bugging back of our mind..... That is uncertainity.. Some of us are earning good salaries but still thinking to grab more and more to see ourselves in a safe position... Which rarely happens.... We need to live with this bro until the next revolution comes...
