I think I've f**ked up bad enough to wallow in my own emotions

I started out a career in sales and as my uni convinced me, 'it's a stepping to marketing and brand management.'

Two years into this role and I'm already regretting it.

  1. I don't get 40% of my salary if I don't close my numbers. (who the fuck says yes two $200k deal in one day?)

  2. Going months without 40% of my salary translates to not being able to pay off my loans. At all.

  3. I really really want to get into marketing. That's always been the deal. B2B companies don't do Marketing, all they have are events.

  4. Job switch has become a hellscape. It's the you don't have enough experience 🔁 can't get enough experience. I am not even a fresher!

  5. The system is designed in such a way that you just can't win. About to reach a multiplier? Bam, your quota just got increased. Go cry about it.

I am stuck. Restarting from internships seems like a shit idea. Universities don't accept under 3 years for a second MBA.

Cheers, I guess.

Try to get into enterprise software sales. You can really make bank in sales but you have to be thick skinned.

I am into Enterprise Software Sales. That is my current role. Unfortunately, more than half of my colleagues haven't met their quota (the last quarter begins next week). The thing, I am not cut out for sales. And I hate uncertainty of my own monies.

Hmm. Try getting into growth or product marketing related roles. Will be tough but best wishes.

How much debt do you have?

About 7 lacks for now plus interest. Incubating a start up is a good idea but not when I've got a pile of debt to clear off.

Try to break into a bigger logo with decent sales team culture - it'll be easier because leads are already halfway sold on the product (because it's a clear industry leader). It just sounds like you're in a bad company with sales leadership that's out to exploit the team. Increasing quotas to get out of paying multipliers is classic toxic sales leadership. There's better leaders and better teams out there. Don't give up on this just yet, it can make you a lot of money without giving up on your peace of mind, in the right company.

I happen to be working for a company that has the best company culture 'out and about.' Perhaps it has more to do with my team? The thing is, I really don't want to be sales side of things. Switching up is just staying in the same hole. :/

I get it. Here's my two cents.. find a few target companies and start reaching out to people in their marketing teams for guidance. Cozy up to them and make genuine connections. Give this a few months, and then go in for the kill. Ask for a referral, have a project ready (ideas, competitor campaign breakdowns etc.)

Alternatively, move to a seed / series A with a strong marketing leader who you can work under. It's easier to break in via startups than bigger companies.

Fyi, HPE has far from the best sales team culture. If you want to give software sales a few more years to make money, look for an international majority company with limited employees in India. They have the best culture.

Damn. It’s the classic, start out in sales first and we will put you in marketing next

Turns out only 5% of the jobs are in marketing and rest all in Sales :(

It's like an MBA put a dent in my account; only for it to dig the grave deeper. Should've just stuck to being a computer guy, I guess. At least, I would've been able fill my pockets in the short run.

Try to switch into pre-sales and account management

If there are openings, I would. How would that be in line with marketing? I really really don't want to be in sales. :/

Leave marketing as of now. Bcz currently less opportunities in marketing. only experience people are getting job in marketing. Or go for digital marketing.

Try upskilling and move to the other role, it will be super draining at first but will be worth it. Aim for good companies that are a bit employees friendly.
Good luck and take care

My company happens to boast everywhere about their global rankings as far as company culture is concerned. I am up-skilling as much as I can but my company is B2B and the roles just do not exist in that. Plus, the movement is almost nill, so I feel stuck is all. I might freelance, again, daunting.

Bro, learn copywriting.

I’ve been in B2B marketing for 4yrs as a fresher from tier 2 college. There’s a lot lot more out there for you to experience. The decision you need to make today is -

Startups or MNC

Product marketing, Content marketing, Demand Generation will most likely fulfill your creative hunger but larger the marketing team, fewer the opportunities to do it all

Events are also a critical element but you’ll start loving them too once you’ve cracked others. They also depend on the maturity of the org
