Just came back from a hospital visit. Amidst some other visitors muttering to him a general “I am so Sorry” was my voice. I never thought a sorry would come from me with as much guilt and sorrow in my heart. I held back tears and tried to steady my shaking arms saying the words.

8 years ago, He was an intern and I was an associate. He started to join me on my Chai breaks, I’d never tried to persuade him to become a smoker but one day I’d seen him staring at box as I was taking out a cigarette.

Looking where his sight was I offered him one and he took it. And off it was to a greater camaraderie over the smoke.

Started with us talking about our lives then the jokes, then the invitations to house parties, the travel plans, talking about our dates, then our girlfriends, marriage and finally our kids.

I haven't been in touch as much after we both had our daughters last year. And I couldn't believe my ears this morning when the call came.

I didn’t make him smoke but showed that it was okay. That one is on me.

I started smoking vapes back in 2019 when a friend of mine introduced me to Juul. I was instantly hooked and loved the flavours. I got so hooked that I used to smoke an average of ~5k puff vape every three days. The nicotine and juicy flavours was what made it too addictive and I always felt that it was much healthier than a cigarette. 

Last week, I fainted while climbing stairs and I felt like I couldn't breathe. I was thereafter rushed to the hospital by my roommates. 

Scans showed several lesions inside my lungs from the harmful chemicals inside. Initial diagnosis was popcorn lungs, and prognosis does not look promising. With no shot at full recovery, the treatment is going to be symptomatic only. 

Fucked my life and threw away the best years of my life. My parents are extremely disappointed in me and I feel like a dead man already.

Smoking cigarettes was getting outdated in the west so they came up with vapes to entice the youth! In India, nowadays, smoking is seen as being "cool" and "powerful" (re: every "powerful" female character in Indian movies and TV shows smokes. Cigarettes are the ultimate FU, apparently). 

I would argue vapes and e - cigarettes are even more harmful than the conventional cigarettes simply because while we KNOW and have researched enough about the latter, we simply do not know enough about the former! I have been into programming since I was 15.
I have been working in the IT industry for the past 8 years and have been very successful in my domain because of my will to solve problems at work as interesting puzzles.

But this interest has slowly and gradually formed a huge part of my life to a level that if I am away from it for sometime, it gives me anxiety.

I am afraid this will affect my other parts of life like giving attention to my family, spending ample time with them.

As a process, I started to have no code Saturdays so that I am completely away from my laptop and spend time doing other mundane things. But this has not reduced the anxiety.

I have been working in HSBC GSC HYD for more than a year and as this journey comes to an end now, I would like to share my experience with you all. 
The first thing that comes in our mind while joining any new company is about their workplace environment and their HR policies. 

There have been quite a few incidents that happened during the last one year which I neglected thinking "Isn't this what corporate life feels like?" I neglected everything to the point where it became unbearable for me and made me go through some serious mental health issues and panic attacks. 

The most recent incident that I would like to share with you all is when I was ethnically humiliated by one of my colleague.

The incident happened on 22 April 2024 when I was subjected to ethnically insensitive remarks by my colleague AA. The exacts words which was used by him is 'EK CHAMAAT MAARENGE, BIHAR PAHUCH JAOGI' which exactly means - I will slap you so hard, you will go back to Bihar. 

I did follow the protocol and informed my manager AT about the whole incident but nothing came out of it, except for a team meeting where I was told that my colleague did not physically assault me, it was just a hatred comment which I can let go of. 

I reached out to the concerned HR team and filed a POSH Complaint for the same, after weeks of the incident, on 3 May, I received an email from the HR team to give feedback for the same without any updates on what action was taken. 

I did let go of everything thinking that anyways I will be leaving the office soon as I am currently in my notice period when another incident happened. 

I was on a smoke break when VKR, AMO from the UK CDD team approached me and made objectifying remarks on me. The comment he made was 'Tmhare jaisi ladki hum aaj tk ni dekhe hai, akele pura UK team ka naam kharab kr k rkhi hai.' which means - He has never seen a girl like me, I have ruined the name of their team. I did ask him the reason for saying such things to which he replied 'tmhare alawa kisi UK team ki ladki ko hm ni dkhe hai cigarette pite huye' which means - he has never seen any girl from the UK team smoking cigarettes. Later while going back inside the office, I saw him eating tobacco and spitting on the wall inside the office premises. 

My LWD is 13 June 2024 and I hope this post reaches to everyone who are currently working in HSBC and to the people who are planning on joining HSBC GSC HYD before I leave.

Wrote a non-smokers rant and with a fellow user's inputs, realized it should be drafted better as a discussion for the greater good.

1) Passive second-hand smoking is not only harmful but irritating too. There are designated smoking zones in offices but not all smokers exclusively stick to them given the numbers at the tea joints just outside the office buildings. Are smoking zones undersized? Chai n/a? Need wider space?

2) Outside office hours, smoking in public places causes the same problem. When you walk while smoking, the people behind you suffocate. If there're shared balconies or close windows, that smoke makes way into your neighbor's place. If they complain, consider at least changing your smoking place if shifting is not possible for either of you.

3) Use the best possible smell suppressing method, chewing gum or whatever during office hours if you don't have an isolated desk or you have to attend meetings. People feel embarrassed to bluntly call it out. Don't make them suffer.

4) If you have the resources, have you tried to consider quitting? There are Psychiatry/Neurology specialists for this. You, your loved ones and non-smokers all will be grateful.

I tried my best to humbly put the points across. It isn't intended to offend anyone.
