Had a call with my cousin this weekend. Life has been very hectic lately so, I have been laying low for a while now. Anyway, my cousin reached out and he brought up something very interesting. He mentioned how the quality of new engineering grads at FAANG has been trending downwards over the last three or so years.

Technical competency aside, there is a weird behavioural shift wherein freshers have adopted job hopping every 2-3 years. He told me that there are zero engineers who stayed longer than 3 years at his org. 

I mean optimizing for pay is fine. The thing to really balance for is impact in the long run because at one point you would find it hard to scale beyond a Lead/EM role at an org. 

But the real thing is that the "FAANG" hype has started to die down amongst the 99th percentile of talent. I wonder how long will it take to have a trickle down effect to 80th percentile and so on.

Just to validate, I asked a friend for his opinion and he opined that "Bhai, tum FAANG mei naaukar ho ya kisi startup mei, ho toh naukar hi." Translation: "You can work at FAANG, or at a startup but you are still a servant(employee)"

Was there any faang hype among 99th percentile folks in the first place?? 
 I graduated from a tier-1 college, majority of my friends are from Similar colleges and if I look in my friend circle, most of the folks are working at high growth startups or something of their own.  
 Sorry to say but faang was never aspirational to begin with.  
 The target audience of youtuber bhaiya/didis were tier-2/3 folks and maybe this kind of hype exists among them.

The FAANG and unicorn employee salaries for even 2-7 YOE engineers is quite insane compared to the average Indian employee pay in other sectors of the economy.

The average SDE2 at these companies makes 50+ lakhs per year in compensation (not “CTC” but real money) The average SDE3 makes 80+ lakhs which is frankly insane.

What are you guys doing with all that money?

Till now I have 4 years experience in a startup and I recently joined Amazon as System development engineer 2.
My goal is simple, after 30 I want to stick to a good company which will give me recognition, promotion, competitive salary and work life balance.
I want to stick to an organization for maybe 10 years and want to reach a higher position along with company growth.

Can any one suggest to me which top companies I should target next after a couple of years.

Which FAANG company is best for the long term.

Why do so many people work in the Big 4 given that you have to work so many hours and your work life balance doesn’t exist.

Is having a Big 4 on your CV really worth all of that hassle and not having a life in your 20s?

Hey everyone,

I'm currently working as a SDE at a startup with about three years of experience. I'm considering making a move, and I've received an offer from an early-stage startup where I'd be joining as a founding engineer.
My main motivation for wanting to switch to some startup is the potential for high learning and growth opportunities, especially since I'm still relatively early in my career. However, I'm a bit torn between targeting multinational corporations (MNCs) like FAANG and sticking with startups.On one hand, MNCs offer more stability and potentially valuable stock options, which can be more than just paper money. 
So, my question is, should I prioritize learning and growth by staying with startups, or should I also consider the FAANG tag and potential stock benefits? Also Would there be any added advantage when I later interview at some FAANG , after working as a founding engineer for 3-4 years in some startup (given I’ll have to build multiple things from scratch and owning multiple modules). The base package for the offer I hold is roughly 
equivalent to what FAANGs pay at my level.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Seeking genuine advice FAANG or Startups ?

Offer : E4 175k pounds
Current: L4 56 Lakhs
YoE: 1 year 7 months

Here's what I have considered:

- Living in London is going to be costly, on an avg I'll be saving 1.2x of India.
- Meta London created a bad reputation for itself when last year it laid off people from India just 2 days after joining
- it's not worth it going from L4 to E4, I probably should switch only when getting a higher level or a big big pay bump (this is probably not a big pay bump considering the cost of living)
- I am not very good at making friends, and I have quite some friends here now... I don't just want to leave everything and be alone in a new city so far away from home.

- the only pro point I see is that..  it is London.

Do you think I should reconsider my decision?

I have decided to reject Meta London offer

Dude, take risk. I know staying in Google looks like safety net but You might not be able to do adventures stuff later in life. Moving to a new country, new food, new culture. You WILL meet new people. Those things can’t be bought.

People in tech are in over their heads. There’s been an unsustainable inflation in salaries and somehow 20 somethings have actually started believing their skills are worth what they’re making

I speak to so many engineers who just with two years of experience are making 30-40 LPA packages. They actually believe they are better than people in say banking who make the same salary after 15 years of grinding it out. 

It’s all supply-demand. Supply will soon catch up to the demand. Salary normalization will happen. 

Your salaries may not grow for years if you don’t personally grow as well in skill set and become more valuable overall. 

At the least, don’t have an attitude about how much you make. Stay humble. Enjoy the good times while they are still here

should i still try for faang or go with this for a year, i really liked the people and team here and they are fully commited to making this startup a success and even their last company got accquired.
