Indian Marriages

Saw a couple of posts on X claiming (read boasting) India’s divorce rate as 1%. If we believe this to be true, I think this is majorly because of the show-off nature of the society. Almost every marriage I’ve known about in last 5 years has loads of adjustments on the girl’s end. Things might be looking so good on out (instagram pics of holiday, social validation of money and wealth) but scratching the surface yields another story. There are issues with in-laws, random expectations for girl and her family, dowry (“gifts”) and what not. Even the best folks (guy) I know in corporate give in to this culture silently in the name of not going against their family. Would like to hear thoughts on this. Are there stories of mid-age/new couples worth considering ideal?

Almost everyone faces some issues and they just suppress it among themselves thinking that it's the right way, and marriage is all about adjustments. Yes, when 2 people would want to live together, adjustments are required. But often, it's the wrong adjustments that prevails. This has been the case not just now, but almost all the time, decades back as well. And the 1% divorce rate is exactly because if this. No one is there to support the person in problem (female/male), and usually their family also asks them to adjust (suppress it) and move on. I mean, what would the society think? And regarding dowry, there's no shame from the groom's side. I mean, they could beg on streets rather than troubling bride's side. And most of bride's side is no less either, they want to do it for the society.

Average divorce rate does not reflect ground reality everywhere. We have a large population remember. Divorce rate is going above 30% in urban India, which is a more accurate reflection of what's really happening. Divorces have doubled and tripled in the last 10-20 years in India. When you lose yourself to these habits, it’s hard to be a good partner because it gives you confidence to do every shit Late Marriages: Marrying at older age often means having rigid mindsets. It’s harder to adapt and change, which can hurt the relationship.

How to find a hubby?

I have been online on a lot of sites (shaadi.com, Bharatmatrimony etc) for 2 years now but it’s been really hard to get a guy. There have not been many expectations, just a decently well educated guy who can talk with respect to ladies (I find it really hard to get guys of the latter, on these sites) Those who were successful in arranged marriage, how did you do it? Any tips please. Should I pay some matchmakers? Suggestions are welcome.

Any 35+ M here and who is going through this?

The post seems to be from a Doctor and the first half sounds more like you're wasting your life if you're not having sex or kids. Like there's no purpose in life if you aren't getting this. (And that's how India made 130+ crore earthlings!) 33M here and these points sounded fascinating when I was 25-26, but not anymore. Except for the EMI part everything else looks like a blessing instead of being in a bad marriage. If you're in your late 30s and unmarried, how has it been for you? What does future and "purpose" mean to you at this point of life?

Big Fat Indian Wedding

INR 10-13 lakh spent per wedding in India. Average annual household income is INR 4 lakh. Assuming 2 households spending, it's 1.2-1.5x their annual income. Assuming only the girl's family paying, it's 3x annual income. It's absurd how much people love to spend to feed and entertain the people they never want to see in their lives again. Also absurd, no big startup in this space. Why is no tech bro/gal conquering the wedding space?
