FullStack is as good a specialist role as Frontend and SRE, and certainly more respected than those. But of course your node based backend may not be sufficient. And where is DB? FullStack means you can take care of end-to-end of a web-application (may be not only web, but mostly web), and that is certainly more respected than any of more focussed role like frontend, sre etc  
 And I don’t think there is concern of which one is being better paid, it pays enough. Besides, by being versatile, it also gives enough opportunities in other connected areas, like you can shift to AI/ML area seamlessly in your organisation without facing much trouble. There is no concern about how well it pays. It is more about your interest.

It’s respected, though more in startup. You can give interview in either of the focused roles and grow specifically in that if you want.

We respect specialist in most fields, for us full stack is no stack.

I have been working as full stack developer past 7 years in stacks like react, react native , flutter, spring boot , nest, graphql so on and so forth. So far being generalist has worked for me as I am never out of projects. However recently I met one Engineering manager who advised me to become a specialist in one domain for better growth going forward . How do you all see this specialist vs generalist idea ?

I have seen a lot of positions about being full stack with a polyglot mindset. One of the full stack positions I worked for was almost always frontend with little backend work.
I acknowledge it's a great way to learn as well and not everyone's cup of tea.
But isn't this a clever way companies have got to churn more work from a single person while paying almost the same as a backend or a frontend dev?

I've seen the market is more interested in paying a high salary to SAP Salesforce Pega experts. 

For example the company which offers 10-12 LPA from 5 LPA with 3 YoE in SAP Salesforce, they're offering 7-8 LPA from 5 LPA to Java Developers.

Why does Java Dev have less salary than SAP Salesforce Pega experts?

I'm a generalist with 4 YOE, earning 17 LPA. 
Skills include but are not limited to: Nodejs, ReactJs, AWS, Jenkins, Docker and Linux. People in my company involve me in everything that requires solving problems. I have worked on multiple stacks beyond what I've mentioned and trained / guided junior to intermediate level of engineers

I'm searching for a new job, but I don't see companies having a dire need for generalists. This is partly because generalists don't command enough confidence unless deployed on a project to work their magic (or so is what I believe)

People having or knowing people in my techstack, do you think it is possible to expect a salary of 30 LPA ? Or is specialization an inevitable next step to take ? Also, how should I position myself in interviews ?

Your thoughts will be appreciated.

Jack of all trades: Any space left for generalists anymore?

So I am currently a full stack engineer at a startup, now I have 3 offers 1 backend and 2 frontend. Currently I kinda like the full stack role that I am in but since I want more income I have to move out. The offer for frontend as well as backend are paying decently well and are very similar offers as far as comp is considered.

What do you think I should opt for, I am 2 years experienced. If I pick the frontend role right now, would I be able to move to full stack again or not?

Planning my career as a frontend developer

I have 3 yrs of experience after my graduation, 8 months of backend experience and  from past 2.4 months I am into  frontend project. 

Now I'm planning to switch trying to start preparation. I have ready with DSA rounds , coming with system design rounds I have a  confusion. Should I need to prepare for frontend or backend system design topics

If I joined in another company should i start my carrer as a sde2 or sde1. If i join for SDE2 position can i catch backend to team standard.

Just an hour ago I had a talk with someone I got to knew through my neighbour. He is a backend engineer by profession and experienced in the field. So I contacted him as I was looking for any job/internship and if he could refer me in any company through his networking. He asked what I was currently learning so I told him I am doing Full-Stack. I did 3 months internship in frontend and was going for backend so I could become a full-fledged developer. He told me not to do that instead pick either frontend or backend and go for it. He advised that big companies usually don't hire full-stack developers instead hire these roles separately so I should just focus on the domain I am good at.

My placements are very close and I am learning as much as I can full-time so what should I do? I am already anxious whether I will get placed or not due to current market situation and advice like this makes me doubt whether I am going correctly or just wasting my time and efforts.

So; can anyone tell me what should I do? Should I do full-stack or go with either frontend or backend?

Have more than 5 years of experience working for a consulting MNC, a SaaS startup and a medium-sized consulting company.

Over the years have gotten the opportunity to work as a frontend engineer(angular, react), a fullstack engineer(java, javascript/typescript, python) and currently a data engineer(pyspark/databricks, azure, gcp).

Projecting my self as a fullstack/backend engineer only.

So I am working on frontend for past 1 year, and work has become monotonous and I always wanted to be in backend, my team only works in frontend.

What should I do because I don’t want to be stuck in frontend forever, people around me are saying if I stay here for a year more, I will be stuck in frontend and it will be very hard for me to switch to backend.

What should be the career trajectory for a frontend developer ?

Hi folks, I am a frontend engineer. A bit of background about me:

- Exp: 4 years
- Tech: Over the years, I have only worked on frontend and some build tooling. For all these years I have only used JS/TS and ReactJS to the point where I currently feel handicapped in other languages.

My problem with frontend:

Most companies I have worked till now except for one, frontend is just converting the UI designs to UI code as fast as possible. Most companies do not offer much time to think about different cases for a component and write it well. Its mostly, if it works then push. Contrast to this, BE does get proper design + arch to ensure it scales well with future requirements.

Why I am thinking of backend/fullstack roles?

Seems better from future point of view. Progression is clear in BE, lot more roles it seems, interview process is mostly standard. In FE its sometimes FE releated, some DSA etc. So never sure what they going to ask. Also, progression in FE is bit unclear and how to make a case for it.

What are my options?
1) In my current company, BE is Java + Springboot, I have started doing some BE tasks here and there but seems Java + Springboot is a mammoth and I dont know if I will be good enough for a switch of roles with this experience. Switching inside the company feels a far fetched dream since there are far less number of FE devs and I have to mostly work on FE tasks one after the other because of scarcity.

2) Learn and do some side projects in Node.js since already familiar with JS and also had done some small APIs(freecodecamp) based on nodejs in the past.

3) Learn python, good for backend software dev + good for ml also going forward. Seems easier than Java to get started with django.

Primary confusion between  2 & 3 is, does side project make any difference when switching for roles or will actual job experience with option 1 be of more value even though it will take a long long time? 

Please suggest if someone has switched roles before.

Moving from Frontend to Backend/Fullstack roles?

I'm a frontend dev, with close to 5 years of workex. I've been trying to switch to a full stack dev role for a couple of years now. Tried switching internally, but it didn't work because there were too many backend devs and too much dependency. 

Stuck with an infinite leetcode loop, did online courses but couldn't put those skills to work in building projects.
 
I'm looking for some advice with a focus on cracking the interviews. The plan is to take up a Full stack dev role in the next 3 months.

How did you switch from fronted to a backend/full-stack role?

Hi everyone, currently I am working as backend developer where I have exposure to Java, spring boot, Kafka and other BE tech. 
       I have been offered a job in full stack development where I basically will handle a complete module, which means both in Java backend, some kotlin and react as FE and UI part also. 
     Should I make this switch I'm just concerned will it affect my chances of getting BE centric jobs in future. For reference I have 1.3 years of exp in BE development currently . The company offering job is Target.
