I joined Zomato for a work life balance as I was from the Finance industry and used to work 6-6.5 days a week for 10-11 hours a day. I'm enjoying my time here but it's an individual role in sales and I'm provided 8 LPA for Tier 2 city. My peers are getting a little higher but my colleagues from the previous industry are making 12 LPA on average. I don't want to go back to finance, plus I want to engage in a team leading role. I have been actively applying for marketing jobs, the situation seems very dismal. Packages are pretty low, companies are not ready to pay above 12 lpa.

Without an MBA, you will suffer. With an MBA, you will suffer but will have a loan to make life worse.

Digital Marketing

Hello all,
I'm a software engineer at one of the service based companies and I graduated last yr.

 Though I always knew software engineering isn't for me, I still gave it a try hoping my perspective would change when I enter the industry. Bummer! I hate it even more

What I have realised is I don't like to code or spend all day finding a solution to an error. Not to say I don't like problem solving but I simply don't like the problem solving that is required for a great software engineer.

I have been a content writer in the past and enjoyed it. I also helped a small digital marketing agency launch a campaign for a product. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of coming up with ideas that suit the tone of the brand, writing copies and much more.

I'm thinking of switching to a marketing role or anything that aligns with what I have mentioned above.  

My question to you are:

1) Is it even possible to switch without an MBA?
2) If so, What should be my approach to applying to jobs? (Kindly tell me the specific and not just -' Make a stellar resume and apply ' kind of a vague answer)
3) What other roles can I look into?

Hate My Software Engineering Job

IIT grad here building a venture backed startup. I think 99% of folks here believe that venture backed founders are super entitled and in a much "cosier" position than employees

Just sharing a few facts about our journey so far if it helps anyone improve their perspectives-

1) Paying ourselves 33% of our campus salary & 60% of what we are paying to our employees (Talking about Pure Base Salary here, not including ESOPs)

2) Insane stress - You basically have to raise money to build (esp if its deeptech because of the high fixed costs) and there are predefined metrics you have to always chase, sometimes just beyond yourselves. 

Your product will be copied if it's good because well, they always have more money than you. You work 7 days a week for insane hours, chasing metrics required to be "afloat" 

3) 99% of venture backed startups result in 0 liquidity gain for founders. So basically in all likeliness, everything is for a net negative return compared to if we took the campus job

So, when you wholeheartedly bash founders as if they are sitting On a goldmine while you are toiling for THEIR gold Treasure, just understand that more likely than not, there is not really any gold but rather an irrational hope they are clinging to

Also, Yes-we pay above market to our employees (100% hike for the last one) but the truth is some startups just Can't afford it. And ironically, there is a much higher looking down on these startups with meagurely paid founders rather than giants like Tech Mahindra paying peanuts to their employees while having a 1000% salary hike for the executives. 

Yeah, most startups need to do better but please appreciate if someone is atleast trying to do better because trust me, it's INSANELY HARD.. 

The number of posts I see about Flipkart making hundreds millionaires is way too less than the ones I see about pinpointing at every single mistake early stage startups do & I just wanted to express my opinion on it

I quit my last organisation (a famous UPI company) in 2020 because, they still are in old technology. No cloud computing, no kubernates, no terraform. Their entire baremetal infra are in 2 DCs (Mumbai and Bangalore). Leadership ideas are outdated. I was very much bored and looking for a change.

Why did you resign?

Amount of effort i put and the salary i got was not proportional. 14 hrs to get 30k salary as a fresher. I had understood that I deserve better - thus i moved to get better pay and better wlb (which I got in swiggy)

DevOps Engineer

I started out a career in sales and as my uni convinced me, 'it's a stepping to marketing and brand management.'

Two years into this role and I'm already regretting it. 

1. I don't get 40% of my salary if I don't close my numbers.  (who the fuck says yes two $200k deal in one day?) 

2. Going months without 40% of my salary translates to not being able to pay off my loans. At all. 

3. I really really want to get into marketing. That's always been the deal. B2B companies don't do Marketing, all they have are events. 

4. Job switch has become a hellscape. It's the you don't have enough experience 🔁 can't get enough experience. I am not even a fresher!

5. The system is designed in such a way that you just can't win. About to reach a multiplier? Bam, your quota just got increased. Go cry about it. 

I am stuck. Restarting from internships seems like a shit idea. Universities don't accept under 3 years for a second MBA.

I was in Zomato , and they laid me off in Nov last year. Now, my ex-manager called me to join the team as they have an opening now. Should I join again?

This time, I’d say put yourself first. Coming to your firing, your manager probably didn’t really have much of a say, could’ve been orders from the top. But if he’s calling you back, that means for some reason they’re giving priority to their ex employee (maybe performance was never the reason for the lay off). If it’ll help you financially , you can offer to join back but at the same time vigorously keep looking outside and quit the moment you get a better & stable offer. If you’re already financially ok and have a run way, pass on this and look out for a better job. Whatever you do, put yourself first this time
