Here's my PoV

1. Get education from a tier 1 college in India or abroad- You'll get good network or can go back to teaching in case the industry goes south

2. Pick a domain that is always in demand - Like healthcare or Finance 

3. Build a strong network that does the job searching for you

Where am I lacking like i applied in thousands of jobs but still getting a handful of interviews, also in interviews I don't know where I went wrong.


PS How can I make sure I'm on the right path and what I should do to increase the chances of selection

Am currently in a circuital branch of a nit (graduating in 2025) preparing for tech jobs , not one of those brilliant minds , okayish on leetcode trying to cover major dsa topics and important questions.
But everyday I keep hearing about layoffs, AI, recession, cost cutting etc
Should I do something different, should I keep preparing  for tech jobs or I should shift to core jobs or GATE, really confused !!

Placement dilemma, recession,job cuts , suggestions ??

Background:

Tier 1 college, Branch - Civil, 2018 passout, Presently working at a state govt PSU with around 11.5 LPA CTC (salary part only, excluding medical facility which is decent)

Things I like at the present job:

1. Home state posting all throughout the career
2. Easy to take leaves and can mostly go home on weekends
3. Good work life balance.

Things I don't like:

1. Rural posting (as of now, will change in future)
2. Repetitive kind of work - not challenging enough and hence limited growth (I guess this is true for most PSU jobs)

Why thinking of the switch?

1. Civil was never really my passion - just what I got.
2. Taking the job was mostly due to family pressure of doing govt job.
3. Liked programming during school days, did web dev work in college fests.
4. I do like the process of building something up and also learning new things, and am hence beginning to feel tech is something that would suit me. 
5. Salary and fomo factors are there but not significant enough. 
I feel I have not been taking enough risks and hence am not being rewarded enough. I want the thrill of grinding and progressing in life.
 
What's stopping me then?

1. Obviously, the safety and protection of a secured job is difficult to overcome.
2. Family wants me to settle now, but I don't.
3. Recessions like this where layoffs take place even for skilled people due to factors not in one's control.
4. The fact that I might have to take a paycut, to begin in this career.

So what should be the path to take?

1. Learn DSA, make projects and apply. Could use my network (although very very few of my batch are in tech, most are in analytics, finance, core sector) to begin somewhere and switch
2. Go for M.Tech in tier 1, and hence aim for product based companies.

I am more inclined towards option 2, as the tech job market being what it is now. I am ready to slog for 2 -3 years (mtech preparation, mtech and then placement)

Please help me out with your views and suggestion.

Here is the way it happens
Fed in USA will increase interest rates to tame inflation. VCs will have to generate greater returns, because USA bonds give better return than most of the bets they’re going to make. Half of the portfolio companies of normie VCs will go under. 

All the limited partners who put in the money into VCs pocket to invest, will start drying up. They'll question every investment the VC makes, so ofc they will become risk averse. 

So VCs will force their companies to become profitable, cut down cost in every way possible. 

Startups will end up firing 20-30 per of the workforce, its do or die for them.  


Now, what can you do?
1/ have buffer amount in fixed deposits (5-6 mos of your expenses), amount you can liquidate easily
2/ now is the time to work hard and prove your worth, be the top performer in team. For the first time in 5y, hiring and retaining equation is in employers favor 
3/ cut down on buying any assets which are not going to appreciate (esp the ones you’re buying on Emi)
4/ upskill yourself 
5/ if possible get a pvt healthcare insurance for you and your loved ones, don't depend on corporate insurance. 

Remember, USA’s recession is world’s recession. Only question is how the cards are going to fall, together all at once or one by one. 

Brace up, next 9 mos are going to be the most difficult times you’ve seen in tech in last 2 decades.

I would like some suggestions on what type of skills I should learn to keep up with the demands and what type of roles or companies I should aim for. Will the recession conditions will be alright around then? If any of your friends or relatives are working there or if you have any idea so please help me out I am a fresher, don't have a full time job right now doing internship will apply for only the top universities in US, I will get in most likely as per my profile. But is it recommendable to go in 2025 because people are not getting and jobs or internships there at all. Even from good colleges. Or should I stay here and prepare for GATE.

Should I go for MS in USA for fall 2025 intake?

There are rumours that fresh rounds of layoffs were to happen in next two weeks. Here is my take on the layoff spree.

High inflation, low jobs, less on spending, economic meltdown for IT employees, impact on IT cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai. 

Less spending on equity, mutual funds, real estate(premium villas, apartments). Chances of housing loan defaults, NPA on raise and the recession crisis. This will go for next 6 months. So, stay where ever you are. Don’t change jobs in this market

I’m thinking to goto US for studies for fall intake 2024, but I’m also worried what if recession won’t end even after I finish my studies, they say the current situation is very bad only around 20% graduates are getting job, whats your point on this?
