Software Engineering: Where 'Good Enough' Isn't Good Enough for Recruiters

What do you think guys is it always the best idea 😜 ?

RANT ALERT I am a Software Engineer with 2 YoE. Wherever I apply they ask for 3+ or 5+ YoE minimum. I am hardly eligible for any roles. To one recruiter I really got angry and said "What is it that you believe 3+YoE candidates can do and 2+ can't ?" I got the same old reply - "It is company's policy" . I wonder who makes them. There are some really stupid people above us. Seriously - how does an EM decide that this position requires at least 10 YoE. I bet they haven't the slightest clue and possibly tossing a coin. Or worst, they think what they were capable of doing at 10+ YoE themselves.

1. You are building a software that otherwise could be built by a 12 year old kid, if given proper training. 2. You cannot code if I cut off google, stackoverflow & related websites. 3. You are just concerned about producing the output quickly because a. your work is time bound, b. you want to stand out from others. 4. You attend countless meetings that carry no value, thanks to Agile. 5. 10 people write code for the same software which otherwise could have been written by 1 person. 6. You write pages of documents just because you are expected to write for the team, compliance & stuff. 7. You don’t care about non-functional requirements as nobody asked for it. 8. You are spending hours together in coding a simple thing & you are branded a hard-worker. 9. Or you don’t spend much time in coding because you impress people with tech jargons that you learnt recently. You are branded a smart-worker. 10. The code you write will be completely rewritten in next 3-4 years just to catch up with the industry trends. 11. Your only goal is to earn loads of money which otherwise could not be earned in other engineering fields. That’s one of the reasons why you are on grapevine. Prove me wrong if you can, by commenting your opinion.

Recently, I gave an interview at this early startup in Bangalore. It consisted of 5 rounds. - The first four rounds were technical, design, and assignment rounds which went well. I answered all the questions fairly well and the interviewer was happy knowing the answer. - The fifth round was with the CEO - Now this was the turning point. He was more concerned about my personal situation. He asked questions like, where I live, where is my hometown, if WFO is okay for me (I was working remotely in my current company ), and where is your dad ( I said he was no more and that turned off the CEO of a company), how will you keep my mother in BLR, why your mom not living with your siblings?. And I was like "WTF man".the only technical question he asked -> "Have you ever hacked a system in your recent days?". 😂😂 After wasting more than 14 hours in the process I received a rejection mail without any feedback. Message to recruiter - if you are more concerned about the personal situation of the candidate, please conduct a preliminary round for that.

The worst part about applying for a job is the process of impressing the dumb recruiter so that she sets up your interview. It is funny when a recruiter who has zero technical skills and has not written a single line of code in her life cross questions me about my engineering projects in past organisations. How can companies change the hiring process so one does not have to deal with these annoying recruiters? or are dumb recruiters just a necessary evil?

There’s this chap on GV who posted that they haven’t received any calls for the past 3 months. Has 2.5 years experience with a current ctc around 15L. We spoke to them only to realise their expectations are 32L (26 fixed and 6 in esops) In a market flooded with resumes due to unfortunate situations, is it fair to have such an expectation and at the same time, call out on GV that they haven’t been getting calls for an interview?

I do not seem to get good quality work ANYWHERE Had been ex-FAANG intern, there I was made to do grunt work too Then worked in a startup, my role there is software engineer in name only, the work I do is more like that of an SDET/QA, literally wrote very little code till now What can I do to save my career? Why do companies scam so much? There is so little overlap between JD and actual work

There has been a huge influx of posts dissing roles like Product, Marketing, HR etc. by Techies. Every other post, or comment is made by them undermining the value of other depts and these cuties think business runs just by their sub-par code. I understand that their delusion stems from the fact they get paid huge salaries by loss making companies. Which is bound to crash sooner or later. Rant over.

I used to believe that people write perfect code in one go, over the years I understood it’s iterative process.
