- Researchers have found that a shocking amount of microplastics are ending up in our brains, with all 91 brain samples examined containing microplastics.
- The brain samples contained ten to 20 times more microplastics than liver and kidney samples, making human grey matter a major dumping ground for these tiny particulates.
- Some brain samples measured an average of 0.5 percent plastic by weight, with higher concentrations found in individuals who had died of dementia, including Alzheimer's.

These past 6 months my performance at work has been dwindling and one primary reason I attribute is memory loss. I find it difficult to recall key points of mails, design reviews, MoMs etc. and often end up missing out things at assigned tasks. What's scarier is that it not only applies to new concepts, I often find myself forgetting even formerly familiar things. During morning updates and discussions I find myself giving uncertain inputs and asking shaky questions because I find it hard to remember key terms, figures etc. I sometimes even forget to pick up some assigned tasks altogether. Random brain freezes have become everyday affair.

Sleep-wise it has been little medium-poor but not so bad that could explain such drastic changes. I'm 30 yr old, male, unmarried and don't have any major health issues (except some stress / anxiety and accompanying Irritable Bowel Syndrome condition).

If anyone else experienced this, how have you dealt with it?

1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝟯𝟬%:

About 20-30% of white collar jobs are absolutely menial that relies purely on a human in the loop model, where the role of an individual is limited to point and click on a screen. Jobs like this could be something along the lines of compliance, inventory tracking, etc. where approving a certain decision relies on a human. 

These jobs are among the most susceptible to automation, even without advanced Machine Learning. Perhaps, it's a matter of trust. People prefer human accountability over machines when it comes to decision-making, due to an intrinsic trust in humans over machines.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝟰𝟬%:

Around 40% of jobs fall into a middle ground: they involve interaction, file management, and value creation but remain somewhat detached from core decision-making. These roles are often found in Big4, WITCH, large MNCs, and marketing/advertising sectors, representing a standard job that offers a decent income and work-life balance, though the level of fulfilment can be debated. 

Typically, those in this category have moderate personal ambitions or high ambition with a low risk appetite. 

𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝟯𝟬%:

This is inclusive of folks who are either:
        A. Work on the cutting edge in their respective fields.
        B. Run enterprises.
        C. Work in well run companies and took exceptional risk

Almost exclusively they work/studied in STEM related fields and coupled it with smart risk taking. It also consists of folks who thrive in ambiguity and have the intellectual horsepower to drive outcomes in uncertain environments.

I posit that our positioning within this tier-list determines our outlook towards life and work.

It was one of the papers that was discussed in my interview at Goldman.

I came to know about this research paper a few years back after consulting a friend doing an ML PhD at University of Maryland, College Park. 

The explanation of the paper:
1. Initialize the neural network with small random values typically (-0.1,0.1) to avoid symmetry issues.

2. Now get ready to do Forward propagation: you pass thetraining data through the multilayer perceptron and compute the output. For each neuron in the MLP, calculate the weighted sum of its inputs and apply the activation function. (my favourite is tanh for LSTM applications)

3. Now compute the loss using a loss function like mean squared error, between output computed and the actual value.

4. Now get ready to do backpropagation, where you need to calculate the gradient of the loss function with respect to each weight by propagating the error backward through the network. 

5. So, compute partial derivatives of the loss with respect to each weight, starting from the output layer and moving back to the input layer.

6. Here is the fun part: update the weights using the gradients obtained from the backward pass. here people usually use adam optimizer, which allows for accelerated stochastic gradient descent. Fun trivia: Adam stands for "Adaptive Moment Estimation".

7. Now repeat the forward and backward propagation process for numerous tries until theperformance of the model stabilizes.

This fucking changed AI forever.
