WLB is personal preference based on your aspirations. So you're the right judge whether you need it or not.. 
  
 To assess WLB in a company, ask current or former employees about their availability after working hours and on weekends. Find out if they are expected or required to work during these times.

Differs from team to team.. But it's definitely not a 9-5 job..

Based on my experience Wlb is more manager centric rather than company centric

Upto 8 hours of work per day and maximum 5 days per week can be considered as good work life balance.

Which companies i should prefer for a good work life balance? I'm fresher and will be getting placement soon!!!

I see a lot of posts about WLB, I want to know what do you consider as a decent WLB. I will go first.

1. Leave early if the work for that day is done
2. No pings and calls post work hours, there are always exceptions and thats okay, should not become a norm
3. Respecting when someone is in vacation and not disturbing them.
4. Not rejecting leaves 

I will add more in comments If more comes to my mind.

Work-life balance, as I thought it to be in the start of my career is basically for me to work for a maximum possible part of my working hours and never any more than that. Life had a higher priority than work so I used to always involve is smart work and kind of planned "under estimate, over deliver". Rest of the "life" contributed to study and enjoy freedom alternatively.
I slowly started to feel, that's not the way. Currently, with a ~4 yoe, I partially think the "Narayan Murthy"s around us aren't wrong. WLB is subjective, at the very start of your career you should hardly look out for it (doesn't mean to work your as* off for the employee with peanut salary, no) but don't expect to work for 8 hrs a day and chillax the rest. To me, it comes in phases and I'm okay with it. There could be a month or few when you might work 70+ hours a week, and then there could be a month where there's hardly any work.
Just keep the smartwork going, but don't time yourself at the early stages. Learn and earn as much as you can, so someday you can gift your grandchild a few million ₹ as well.
Its completely my perspective, probably because I've been blessed with the my kind of work as a SDE.

What is WLB to you?

With my small experiences in the past, I haven't seen a good Startup with WLB for SDEs (0-3)yoe.

I want to know whether you work in a startup where there's WLB.

I understand that more work means more learning but I do not agree with this every time. There are way more SDEs working in very very small startups who have humongous learning with a pinch of money they are being paid.


For me WLB means enough time to relax and spend time with my loved ones and also less mental stress.

I have observed that the Leads/Managers will give any features no matter how complex they are, need to be built with 0 to no help specially for SDE-1 people.

And later they are blamed and scolded or they're put in PIP and ultimately thrown out.

What is your experience?

Hey guys, i'm planning to switch my company after 8 months in the company and there is a notice of 2 months so that would be 10 months in the company.
