Yeah, it's a bit of a mess. Companies often value new talent over loyalty, hence the big hikes for switchers. It's frustrating, but that's the current trend.

Industry sometimes gives up to 200% hike to someone who is switching, but they hesitate to give even 5% to loyal employees who are staying with them.

I am seeing a lot of layoff related posts everywhere from news articles to LinkedIn.. Is the Job market really that bad now? Or just the media is projecting that way? 

If it's really bad, which department you think is the most affected? How's layoffs specifically in India? Or is it layoffs in US but more hiring in India due to cost cutting?

It is really bad right now 
 1. Layoffs in many of the companies, irrespective of whether they're a startup or a big MnC. 
 2. Almost everyone I know of wants to switch, because of no/less appraisals from last 2 years 
 3. Bad work life balance - people thinks switching might help 
 4. Too much competition for any open position. Because of too much supply, companies are low-balling and people would accept the offer.  
  
 Recruiters ghosting is too common. Even if you've killed in your interviews and recruiters get someone who's ready to join on less pay, they'll simply ghost you.

I work on growth and marketing, and have to deal with perf marketing a lot. 
It is in these situations that I have to sometimes interface with people from FAANG or other larger companies. Because our org has major spends, we often have Account Managers/others from these companies as interface.

This experience is consistent across Microsoft, Google, Meta, etc. 
Firstly, they absolutely do not give two shits about your business. They will pretend to care about your business goals and even pretend that they understand what a startup needs. But they just dont. These are the most CHECKED OUT people I have ever met in my life

They meet with you like it's a check list. 

They absolutely do not care about startups. As platforms or as people. They don't give two fucks whether their work has any impact. It's just pretense - and hitting whatever basic targets they have. 

They do not care about anything related to work apart from 12 pm to 5 pm (their work timings)

They are a plague, slowing down society, lacking any spark to ever do any real work in this world.

I have been working in my company for over 4 years now, each time it's time for Appraisals I am told the company cannot go beyond 7%.
But I have progressed in my role through the years and I have delivered excellent growth results this year when the context has been dull. I am super frustrated it could end up with being handed a 7% increment and of course a football to take home, especially after my meeting with my manager. 
It's getting to me now!

I joined this mid level product cum service based company 3.5 years back and got around 5 increments with average of 40% hike each time.

This year they have increased by just 5% and also they promised they won't layoff any current employees which is a good sign.

Is this expected seeing the current scenario around IT world?

Got a salary hike of 5%. Is this expected in the current layoffs going on?

Me thinking to switch after every 2 years max, for bettter opportunity 🤟, and better hike. Because eventually after 1-2 year, you reach saturation point. 

My concern is It is good to switch to new company even if current company is really good with you in all the way possible.... Except giving salary hike😔

I have started giving interviews and the expected CTC i had mentioned was with a 40% hike. Nope, i have received my appraisal in the range of 15%, due to good performance. Should I revise my expected CTC? How does this usually work?

What has your experience been like in today's market compared to 2021? For people who got a huge hike in 2021, how have your appraisals been like? Are you facing issues while switching?

Personally, I haven't been getting random emails from recruiters like I used to get back in 2020/21. Have you also seen a slowdown?

For people who have not been looking out, how have appraisals been for you this year compared to 2021 when attrition was quite high?

I'm 22 and like 6 months into my first, I really love what I'm working on and what I'm being compensated for that. But whenever I ask anyone whats their plan is they say mostly switch within 1-2 years, especially freshets who were selected along with me, and surprisingly almost no one here is from pre-covid.

Does everyone switch jobs as often as it seems?

I believe it is extremely difficult to judge exact level of an individual during an interview. It is better to also use past salary as some indication of value to last company. Having said that, the company needs to get to the correct salary range depending on performance in first 6 months.
