How to make the most out of an MBA?
I am going to join a tier 1 MBA program in India next year. What should I know before joining? Also how to make the most out of these two years?
Profile: BSc with Stats, 2 years of product management experience.
I’m going to join an MBA college this year. I’ve 2-3 months of available time before the session begins in either June or July 2024. Currently, I’m learning Excel and PowerPoint as recommended by almost everyone I’ve asked for advice. Besides this what skills, certifications etc. should I learn in order to enhance my CV(My major specialisation is going to be in marketing). I’ve also got to know that certifications don’t have much value since you cannot mention those in your CV. So is there anything I can do as of now which will help me to strengthen my CV. Please don’t tell me to relax and chill because my academics are below average and I’m going to face issues during my MBA journey so I want to utilise these 2 - 3 months in a productive way so that it gives me headstarts for my MBA journey.
Also any advice on how to make the most of my MBA journey, including specific actions to be taken during the program with a focus on achieving a successful placement would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance!!!
Depends on what college are you joining
College is not final yet. As of now, I've admission letters from private colleges. New and Baby IIM will declare their results in the last week of April or the first week of May. Then I will decide which college to join.
Pick up some base courses in marketing and finance so you already know basic stuff like 4Ps, pestel, ebita, companies financials etc. This will save you time later and help establish a strong base. Build your CV, summer internship drives will start within a few months after you join, have your CV ready with excellent stuff to get ahead. Participate in intra college and company hosted competitions from day 1. This thing is super competitive in IIMs so have a lay of the land beforehand.
Master the art of networking, my friend. "Jaisa vyakti, waisi vritti." (As the person, so the behavior.) Excel in Excel, PowerPoint is your power. Marketing? Digital is the future.
I like the way you described it Excel in Excel and PowerPoint is your power. Thank you for the advice🙌
I guess you must have already been habituated reading up on diverse topics. Build it like a muscle, not just by improving your reading speed but also discussing with friends or anyone on the same boat.
The stack of readings and ppts, you will have each day can be overwhelming but the rigor is all the more worth it. Do polish your public speaking skills if need be.
Identify what are your weak areas are and work on them from now itself.
To make the most of it, don't think of it as just another degree or a box to tick off, more like something to better yourself exponentially. But more than anything, keep an open mind.
Okay got it. Thanks for all the suggestions🙌
depends on what kind of roles you want to get into after an MBA. if you wanna go for marketing - google’s digital marketing course is excellent. if you want to go for consulting, start doing case study prep.
