What’s the right way to get laid off

I don't know why everyone is making a big deal out of layoffs. Even the ones who laid off are not that concerned than the ones who comment. Laid off employees literally get free money upwards of 10 lakhs in many cases of senior developers who are laid off from top tech startups. Companies pay severance equal to 3-6 months salary of laid off employees. Some even offer other benefits as well. I personally know a couple of Devs who got around ~9-10L in severance pay. So, yeah if there are layoffs happening in funded tech startups or leading tech companies, considering their pay range, laid off employees get handsome severance pay including employee benefits

Layoffs are a common theme these days among all kinds of companies. In general, Layoffs are bad for the people affected. I want to hear stories from people who had a layoff that was done with dignity, respect and humanity. Please describe what made your experience of the layoff great and which company were you part of. So I was laid off a couple of months back and the organization was forcing me to resign. I countered their basis of decision and was able to get my severance instead of notice. Further, they were asking me to serve a reduced notice but I opposed saying this is a layoff/termination from organization’s side and was out in a week. As a result they have deliberately put things like “his performance was average” in the experience letter. Can someone help me with how to deal with this situation for prospective employers? P.S: I do not want to go the legal route with my prev org and want to focus on the next prospects so if any HR in the network can help with some advice, that would be great.

Context: 10.5 YOE, Marketing lead. I've been looking for a switch since September last year. I'd seen signs of maybe my role or the company itself folding very early and knew 'twas time to bolt. But it's not that easy. Back then - 1 year in a startup meant hey not bad, people still spoke to you and considered your profile. Anyway, so the majority of my time searching for jobs was the shitty Easy Apply or IIMJOBS premium account route. Suprise suprise. It doesn't work. But hey I was still employed and not nearly as motivated as someone who's unemployed. Cut to layoffs: Got laid off with my whole team and a huge chunk of other leaders. My first layoff, felt hilariously like the last day of school. To the org's credit they gave us 3 month severance, leave encashments and extra months for those who'd been there for 2 years+. In hindsight hearing the horror stories of 2k severance from Byju's. I'm grateful for the nice golden parachute I got. I'll be honest, it contributed heavily to my mental stability. I had time, I had leverage, I didn't have to run for the first shitty opportunity that came my way. The How I did it (why you struggled through the above stream of consciousness) - Wrote to 159 founders with one pagers to 35 of them with ideas on how i'd lead their marketing function. 5 replies. 3 interviews. 2 offers - didn't take em cuz they were super early stage or diff cities. This is immediately in month 1 so I've already started feeling icky about not getting great brands to have in my set. - Easy Applied to 768 (I ran a Gmail search, this is a real number) jobs. 99% no responses or you've been rejected. -Kept changing one letter on my Naukri.com profile, got me 6 calls, 3 interviews and 1 conversion I think theres a word limit to posts 🥲 following up as comments below.

I see my organisation is being very cautious about the layoff process. They are forcing us to resign instead of them firing us. Also the communication is put out saying we are resigning and serving notice period instead of mentioning severance.

Product Hunt hired a new CEO last month (in September). This guy deduced in 1 month that they need to fire people? That too with such a generic BS reason. Doesn't it take atleast a quarter to understand how the business and all the systems work at a new place? You haven't even seen through your first quarterly results and review. Seems to me that the Board installed a new CEO that they could control because they wanted to layoff. Can other people share what they know or think could've happened?

I have recently got laid off from one of the Fintech firms. They have been silently letting off people since last year but the no. Of employees let go have been higher in the past 2-3 months. They have downsized by more than 100 people in the last 8-10 months to avoid PR disaster. Not naming the company but just wanted to know if this is right way to do it both from employee and employer perspective.

How the HRs react if you tell them you were laid off, please share your experience? Also, what other reason we can give for looking out for change in less than 5 months?
