Why some data analysts call themselves Data Scientists??

I spoke to an experienced guy in the IT sector who has worked in many FinTech firms and consulting companies. He said when the data science hype started several years back, companies started getting funds from venture capitalists to set up data science wings . Companies went on a hiring spree with this money to hire data science professionals. However, as the years passed, these data science departments failed to generate revenue as expected. Also, some aspects of data science will very likely be automated. Talking to my nephew nowadays seems like the AI bug has gotten to him. Even going back during the early parts of my own career and even undergrad, ML and stats was still a fledgling field. Most of the smart folks went into SDE roles at top tech. I still remember that even back then, hiring for roles like these were extremely theoretical. You would test even experienced candidates with undergrad topics which was slightly outdated tbh because most of the functions were abstracted away and it is obvious that you would not remember the matrix approach to finding weights for a simple linear regression model. Has this changed now? Because I don't think interviews like that actually evaluate the accumulated wisdom that experienced professionals bring to the table. I mean it is generally a waste of time for anyone to brush up manual derivations or remember SQL niche intricacies. Usually it is better to test for the 80% knowledge that is actually useful on a day to day basis. I mean if the main things that companies test in experienced candidates is something that can be rote-memorized from a book then they are not testing the right things no? What do you all think? Just wondering about this for some time now especially considering the hype around AI?

I have seen from the place I work at that growth (in terms of monetory benefits and opportunities) is much better for SDE folks than Data Science people. 1. For freshers it's easy to learn to write css and get complete responsibility of a task henceforth on completion getting more recognition and praise than in Data Science. Good tasks are almost never given directly to freshers due to steep learning curve in the field hence leading to lower growth rate. 2. SDE folks generally have tasks divided into sprints which make them a lot more easily trackable and appreciable at reviews, whereas in DS at least at the place I have worked tasks are given haphazardly and almost never account to much while reviews. 3. Another observation is that folks who have worked for about 3-4 years in SDE profiles have now become team leads whereas DS folks have not been promoted at the same pace Looking at all this, in my opinion data science folks are treated as second class citizens as compared to sde folks. All this might not be true for all the firms, and I want to know if anyone else has some views on this. I'm frustrated!

I always come across these profiles and JDs which mention "Computer Scientist I/II" at Adobe. Are they real computer scientists? Do they invent things? Are they the ones working with NASA, MIT, STANFORD, Google Brain etc. I don't know if developing a framework qualifies you to call yourself a scientist. I don't know. Please shed some light.
