Is it okay to be average at work?
I feel I have always been very competitive in my life and it has always drained me out. When I got job I thought finally I am done with this rat race. But no, everyday I have to push so much in order to prove myself in my job which gets very overwhelming and disturbs my work life balance.
I want to ask people with experience is it okay to be an average employee?

I find it amusing that everyone I see on grapevine worries about :

Culture - when thinking of a job change
Money - when deciding to take a specific job 
Culture - after joining the company

It seem culture matters most. Salary is transient.  It pays the bills.  Yet there’s no great way to learn about culture of a company. Even grapevine only gives you a Salary tab. 

Is this a gap and need in the market ?

We had an internal referral, and I checked her portfolio before reaching out.
She had multiple projects, worked with many customers across countries, the designs were fresh and inviting, no clutter.

She was the one (for the role)!
Exactly what we were looking for. 

I had a budget of 25-30LPA, had quoted 19-24 LPA (because well)
Her expectations were 30-33 LPA

Cut to, she was the only one till final round and they were processing her offer letter at 31LPA

Hi folks,
I wanted to know your opiion, I’m a graphic designer at a mid stage startup where i have been working for past 1.5 yrs and now i have got job offer to be in founding team for branding and marketing (which i have good experience in both) of a early stage startup which is already funded, product is good and so are founders. Should i do it?

A little background:
I started coding properly from Nov’21, started with C++ and gradually leveled up and began full fledged problem solving in vacations as there was nothing else to do exams were over. I did problem solving with the intent on fetching a job offer. Overall during my entire preparation I solved more or less 450 problems (leetcode & others). 
Then came the placement session. I somehow secured two offers on the same day and the TPO office decided to give my name only for a single company which was Amazon.

Present:
As offers get rescinded to Jan’24. I somehow got an off-campus offer in a PSU where I am currently working. Here I am working in s/w development team, and till now:
1. I have developed two modules (by looking at already implemented code and figuring out how it can be used in my modules).
2. Some generic classes to format all reports generated in the entire project. (object, constructor and methods, fairly easy although understanding the requirement was the tough part).
The problem is that I always take time to figure out the things and I have this solid impostor syndrome. I take time in understanding the requirements and how to get started and what to do next.
This may be due to the fact that I didn’t get converted into full time from my internship (In retrospect this was seriously my fault, I was too much occupied with my final year thesis, the project itself was too hard and complicated and the mentor was mostly busy and no-one else in the team of entry level from whom I could discuss more, also other college issues). Sometimes I think that I could have done it better.

Dilemma:
Now as my joining date is coming close I’m super confused and nervous (given the present scenario) a bit scared to leave the current job and join Amzn or not. I am starting to feel that I am not prepared and have not solved any problem for the past 5 months. Read some reviews regarding Amzn and it all seems that the pressure is going to be too much and I'm not sure

The story: One of my friends was campus-placed last year in MBB. They recently resigned and accepted an offer in a boutique consultancy, with a ~20ish per cent hike. However, they were met with a lot of criticism, from our peers and even professors.

I personally believe that they made the right decision as they disliked the CoE they were allotted to. And they were able to get a hike and do a good job in this market.

Experienced folks, shadow your wisdom upon me. Am I thinking from a very limited perspective?

Including a breakdown of compensation to show what’s possible, apologies for the humble brag. 

Year 1: 12 lakh 
Year 3: 36 lakh + 15 lakh SOPs 
Year 6: 50 lakh + 5 lakh SOPs 
Year 8: 75 lakh + 30 lakh SOPs
Year 10: 110 lakh + 60 lakh SOPs

I’ve worked in increasingly larger companies, latest is a decacorn+.

Which offer is better and why? 

Pune:
CTC: 20+ variable(no clarity on variable)
Company: Startup with 1 year hike cycle (bare minimum hike)
Company Size: More than 120
Reporting to: Business Head
Role: Core BD with slightly overlap of cross functional 
Stability: Slightly more than Bangalore one(I would say 1% more since they slightly work as lala company)

Bangalore:
CTC: 22 +12(Esops)
Company: Startup with 6 month hike cycle 
Company Size: Around 30
Reporting to: Founders
Role: Set up and lead the entire Business and cross functional roles(cr.functional offer better learning and growth tooo)
Stability: OK than Pune

Both the company are startups and in terms of stability the Pune one holds higher stability at company level(I would say 1% more than Bangalore) but since its sales roles so I think it doesn't matter. (as per LinkedIn the avg duration of sales folks is 11 month in Pune company)

Which offer is better in terms of growth prospect and considering that you want to move to higher role in the future or may be start again in future ?

I was preparing for Product roles for quite some times, But as far as i am seeing software engineers are paid more, so shoud i start preparing for software domain now or stick to the product role.

I joined my current org right out of college and have been working here for 2+ years. I really like the company’s culture, openness while pay is also great as per my standards and needs.

I recently interviewed for a startup casually and got an offer as well. Now I’m in a dilemma whether I should join the new org or stay although the pay jump looks pretty decent to me. 

P.S. Not a brag post but genuinely looking for answers as I’m really out of touch with the industry and given the current recession, can’t really make up my mind.

I joined my company (tech startup) as a Product Manager and over the course of 3 years have worked both in Product as well  as in Business teams. And to be honest, I like both the work.

Now, I am looking for a switch and unable to decide which role I should pursue - Product or Business. So, I would need help from you all. 

From a long term career point of view keeping in mind compensation, scope of work and transitioning into leadership positions (CXOs), which is a better role and why - Product or Business?

The company I used to work for recently shut down and I just received my first offer from a sizeable unicorn. 

I am being massively low-balled (20% cut). And on top of it, it's an exploding offer. 

I have a couple of interviews lined up (they start after May 28th) but at the moment, this is the only offer I have. 

What should I do?

1. Hard negotiate? Leave the offer on the table if it doesn't work out. 

2. Soft negotiate. Get the offer. Interview with other companies and try to get a better offer before joining (feels wrong)

Things to consider:

- I have 10+ months runway
- Last cash comp was 24L at 2.5YOE

I'm leaning towards 1.

I'm being lowballed. What should I do?

Suffering from success. 24L base for <2.5 yoe was already high. And that’s the reason why u have so much runway. Good luck on whatever u decide.

Should one try doing different things early in the career for example try different roles in software engineering, data science, product to see which role one likes the most 

Or

Should one try doing the same thing for some years early in the career to allow the compounding to kick in and you have something with depth to show for when you have 3-4 years of experience. y

I am a backend engineer with 7 years of experience. I've been rejected by multiple organizations during salary discussions. They mentioned they can't provide such a high salary. Are my expectations inaccurate?

In my corporate experience, I have observed two kinds of leaders - 1) A hard task master, very high on IQ but more often than not low on EQ and 2) High on EQ, above avg on IQ. I as a manager/ leader fall under 2) and usually get work done without authority but I do experience at times, some peers and reportees taking advantage of my behaviour

 In my view, anecdotally I see type 1) leaders succeed more in corporates even if it comes at the cost of facing flak/hate from directs/indirects. One of my previous managers was unpopular for his toxicity but somehow I kind of built a decent bond with him. Once over drinks and dinner, he candidly told me, I'm not here in this organization for making friends and I'm here only to get results and he did deliver on results every year.

My question is, can type 2 leaders even climb up the ladder specially where cut throat competition exists. Sometimes I do feel I need to be more like type 1 leaders obviously not at the cost of toxicity - disrespect, shouting etc. 

What are your thoughts?
