A health guide for your ageing parents :

Yo! Hello peeps 🤗

Why this post?

Qki "Dil chahta hai" ~ Shankar Ji's voice

Health is my P1 in life. I am selfish about my health because that's how I ensure I am blithe, I can take care of my loved ones and perform my best in general.

But this post is not about my health.

Now, Question to you, How are you taking care of your parents? It’s important because it will save you and your family from looming emotional and financial traumas.

I assume that most of our parents must be in the 35 - 90 age range. Why 35 dawg, you must ask, cannot exclude Rajasthani folks 💀, jokes apart.

PS: Yup! You can roast me / correct me for this one.

Few practical tips that I am planning to implement /implemented for my parents:

  1. Random walking ain't pumping their heart enough:

Oh God, Indian parents love brisking and they think that random walks will make them Meryl Steep & Sylvester Stallone. Dear parents, that’s not the case. For you to maintain muscle mass & functional strength weights must be unracked & lifted💪. I would suggest you either enroll them in a nearby gym or buy resistance bands, and dumbbells for them to do homeworkouts.

You can check the playlist below for home workouts:

  1. Throw challenges:

Initially, their performance will be very dull, but in 1-2 months you will see many positive changes in their bodies. Throw them challenges, and sign them up to run marathons, give them fitness challenges that will improve their progress.

  1. Be careful:

Listen, their progress is going to be slow. Recovery from any injury slowly declines as we age. It’s better to go slow than lose all progress and hard work to an injury.

  1. Sleep Priority:

Like everyone, many retired ones are now addicted to reels/shorts affecting their sleeping schedule due to melatonin blockage. You can gift them good books to read just before bedtime. I have observed that for Indians books are sleeping pills😴. While everyone wakes up to beep-beep, schedule an alarm for them to sleep on time.⏰

  1. Inducing purpose:

Well, this one is the most important. I have seen many uncles/ aunties lost in their lives. After retirement, many parents undergo mid-life crises and whatnot. Most of them have dedicated their lives to us. We need to reignite the lost flame in them.

  1. Restarting education can help them make new friends and might open the doors for new careers.
  2. Please support them in the perusal of their lost hobbies.
  3. Connecting them to the NGOs.

I know this is not a comprehensive guide, but it’s a good starting point or maybe a reminder post for some.

@KRIEGER7 - good one. But trying hard to get my parents to do beyond walking - there’s so much resistance and reluctance. Fr I need them to go to the gym or have a trainer come home to train them.

I completely understand the resistance that you are facing because I faced the same initially.
If they are not listening It's time for you to become stubborn like you were in your childhood. Remember how we used to cry for that particular toy 🧸?
If you train yourself, I would suggest you buy dumbbells and resistance bands to help them on Saturdays and Sundays.
You can do homework outs with them/ show them the correct forms.

~ Remember the feeling & solace that you find when your parents can travel effortlessly with you is worth all the effort.💪
