Is it normal..

I just got laid from from the current company and looking a job as a creative designer , most of the companies are adding Video creator in the JD , i mostly work on 2D designs and digital sketching, every company I checked are asking for a graphic designer + video editor . Is this normal among mid companies ?

No, it's not normal. Unfortunate part about design related jobs is people trying to clump multiple roles like video, design, print etc. Sometimes it can be alright since they would compensate in payment, but others are mostly just exploiting people.

Graphic design is not UI UX is not packaging design and so many other things, I could write a separate rant about how little people understand when it comes to design jobs in India.

Yeah , it's just very hard to find a proper JD role nowadays since they are asking for multiple responsibilities on single role

I’ll throw in my POV here. Static ads/creatives barely work anymore. There’s very little traction on such ads. So, it is mostly video ads that need to go out along with a side thumbnails, etc. Print ads and other off line collaterals are almost insignificant in number for most D2C, app/internet based orgs. Therefore, when hiring a graphic designer, video editing skills is added on the JD. It is a huge plus, if not a mandatory skill. I’ve been hiring for this role with such skills - honestly, it is not about over-working someone. It is mostly about keeping the role well engaged, occupied and even relevant. There’s no harm in upskilling if you already have access to Creative Cloud.

You're right , but if it's 60 graphic design and 40 video creation, it's okay (my Skillsets are with art , design and game design) , i can work with video editing if given .but if it's the majoring skillset they are seeking, it's hard to showcase a portfolio

In that case, consider developing your game design skills further. You can’t have a portfolio of something that’s not of your interest. Be open to growth in some form or other. Good luck.

Is market opening anytime soon for entry level designers?

I myself am looking for product design roles. All I see on linkedin and other job portals is that companies only looking for Product Designer 2 candidates/mid-senior/lead designers. Even if I see any PD1 role, they ask for minimum 1 year experience (internship experience no included). I don’t understand the rationale behind it. Its getting tough now that I am looking for a job since 2 months and its tiring. Is there anyone who understands the current market trend and has an insight about when junior/entry level designers can expect jobs to reopen? Would love to get your speculations on the hiring scene of upcoming months.

I got almost 2 years of experience. I did internships at great companies. Got a formal degree. Have been a pseudo PM as well. I can think of UX before the UI. What’s with these companies and their expectations from designers to do everything?

I’m interviewing at a bunch of companies and most of them want a generalist in the product designer position. Expecting to take on every responsibility possible, leaving no room for any sort of work-life balance. Founders/co-founders, listen up. You might be obsessed with the problem you’re solving. Do not expect others to be equally obsessed. With all due respect, we’re here to look after ourselves and our families. You disguise these additional responsibilities as “learning opportunities” which is absolutely bollocks. You don’t even offer to pay accordingly. Just needed to rant. If anyone else here has a different point of view, I’m open to changing my opinions.

How to deal with this nightmare? 👻

I just joined a semi government organisation in delhi as a Senior Graphic Designer. Prior to that I have worked for early stage startups and been a contributor to their growth story. But in my current organisation they don't like If I do things on my own or create something different from their existing designs. They even tell me what colors or font to use in designs particularly the assistant content manager who assigns work. Anything I make is rejected and replaced by their old ideas which they are following. How to deal with this?
