Harassment by police patrol
I was standing near Whitefield in my 4 wheeler around midnight, just away from the hustle bustle of the fast life, smoking a cigarette and had a beer 1 hour before the incident (beer can was present in the car) when a police Jeep stopped and asked me to come out. They checked my entire car (to find more illegal drugs 'read Marijuana') but didn't find anything. Started threatening me with the car seizure. When I asked them to do breath analyzer test as I was 100% sure of being in the permissible limit, they asked me to come to police station for the same after they issue me a challan. How can they issue a drink driving challan when I am not drunk and without a breath analyzer? And started threatening me with 25000 rs fine plus car being released in 6 months plus more than a lac of rupees in lawyer cost. (Ofcourse bullshitting me) They were doing the proper good cop bad cop tactic and I had to pay them 7k bribe just to get out of there. (Couldn't risk the whole court drama, couldn't afford time as I was roaming without the knowledge of my family and avoid anxiety to them and my car also has northern registration) But is this justified ? Can we not even smoke a cigarette in our vehicle in this godforsaken city ? Do we need to be mindful of the goons or the police ? Anyways, what is the best way to get out of such situations?

It is not illegal but becomes illegal when u r drunk and tested positive...
It is ok to stay out at midnight...unknowingly if there is a dead body some feet away from u and u didn't get a chance to notice ...the first thing police do when they enter crime scene is suspect you and include u in the FIR report....

Parking the car around midnight in a public place and smoking with a beer can lying inside is like serving the police everything they want on a platter! Knowing that police if they spot you can harass the heck out of you and yet going ahead doing this is like bringing it upon yourself.
Blaming the system is one thing. How qualified are we to blame the system is another! You could've saved yourself all the hassle had that smoke waited for a private place.
It would have been okay if they had done breath analyzing.
The permissible limit is 30 mg of alcohol in 100g of blood which roughly means 2 pints of beer is fine.
I had taken that beer 1 hour before, so there is no chance of being out of limit.
But the point is THEY DIDNT DO THE TEST.
While I agree that I invited all the troubles, but what was wrong here ?

I had a very very stressful last few weeks both at family and work front and just wanted to go somewhere and think about everything in peace over a cigarette!
While I agree the breathalyzer should have been used, smoking in a public place was more than enough an excuse for them to hound you (the fine is 200 or something but trust our police to not settle for that). The best we can do is avoid things that draw unnecessary police harassment.
Aisa kaam ho kyu krte ho.. ciggerate se issue nhi hota...beer pike, beer can gaadi me rakh ke ghum rhe ho... You know it very well how corrupt police department is and you are giving them chances.

Haan that can shouldn't have been there.
But they did not do any test.
If you live with family, sometimes it's not possible to drink at home in the middle of the week.

Bangalore cops are more corrupt than the north. For everything they want is hard cash, one of my friends was smoking a joint in his home, police forcefully barged in and arrested him for smoking one joint. They asked 50k to let go, but he didn't give, so they put him in jail for 2 nights and put a report of possession of 2KG of marijuana.
Finally released after parents came with 25k bribe.
He is from Karnataka staying in BLR.

That's not called drunk, that's absolutely within permissible limits.
The pigs cheated you into paying.
The fine for smoking in a public place is 200 rs, and not 25k.
In case you paid via digital means, you can create an issue on twitter and raise a complaint.
No actually, he had a beer on him, if they would have tested, that would be a greater issue.
Third, bribe was unjust.
They can remove him from any secluded area after dark, it is within their power.
+ nobody takes a bribe online.

Did you pay them via UPI or cash? If you paid them via UPI just post this on X and file a complaint for harassment and extortion. Similar incident happened sometime back and cops were suspended.

You might get better perspective on this from reddit. Too much corporate bullshit goes on here and everybody wants to project themselves as if they are a saint.
Long story short - 7k is a bit on the higher side but given the unnecessary drama it could have caused otherwise, it was a wise decision.

Hey @Kageyame you did the best possible thing which could have been done by any sane person at that point of time.It's a fact that we have bigger things in life to deal with than starting a fight with police or starting a full court room scene . I have been into this situation and what has worked in these situations for me is to talk to them as politely as you can and try your best to negotiate .But again they see your car ,clothing ,phone etc and they believe you can easily pay 7k or more . Hard luck but chill just take your next beer at your friend's place.
Also, those who are moral schooling him ,I have lost to their logic .Either you all are just faking to be so good or have never been in this kind of situation.

Buddy first & foremost your car having North registration is an attraction to them as fly gets attracted to sweets.
Second, you need not pay the bribe.. you should start recording all these discussions and this will put pressure on them and also always be very confident when you haven't done anything wrong.. no need to pay bribes and all.
It will be worth ur time to argue and even if u have to visit court. Most of the time these ppl are looking for ppl who wants easy escape and doesn't want to go to court. The moment u say it's ok let's go to court they themselves will be petrified..
When I'm right I actually become stubborn and I demand them and then they're on backfoot.
Worst thing - they can read body language and expressions so if you get worried then you have fallen for their bait.
