Director or head of UX, do you need portfolios to get hired?

As you advance into more senior roles, what would you or a hiring manager expect to see in a portfolio? Say you’re seeking a Director level or ‘Head of’ position, what would a portfolio look like? How would it differ from more junior portfolios? What should be included? What shouldn’t be included? And do you even need one? We’re also discussing leadership playbooks as alternatives to ‘project portfolios’. Anyone have any experience of this? Good idea? Bad idea?

Head of Design reports to me, so I am somewhat eligible to answer this

  1. Client work that is published, public links
  2. Any Metrics of the campaign your design was part of
  3. Case studies if you have done any. Talk about aspects why you did what you did
  4. Managerial skills - huge huge plus point if have handled a team of designers
  5. Inter department collaboration- how effectively can you manage requests, last minute changes and still able to meet deadlines
  6. Personal projects, adds character to you but not necessary
