How to calculate freelancing rate?

The project I am looking to take up will start mid-May and should be over by mid-July. I'm currently working as a freelancer, helping an established startup build a mobile application from scratch. What would you recommend as a fair monthly rate for someone with my background and expertise?

What all should I know before getting into this? Someone has approached me for part time work for them. - should I and the person sign a contract? If yes, who prepares the contract and what should be it's contents? - should any specific clauses be defined? - should I take up upfront fees? - how to handle them validating work is done or not? - should I not keep it hourly? Should I define the fees based on the work done?

I’m a copywriter with 4 years of work experience with some fairly big brands. Revently a few people have been reaching out for copy projects. Some are willing to pay per project, and others look at a long term commitment. So far I’ve been letting them tell me what they are willing to pau and if it seems okay to me I take it up.
