Engineers Irreplaceable ?

I have heard a lot of people suggesting stay on a technical side ,coding side if you don’t want to be laid off and always have a market value . But now I see almost everyone is getting laid off !! What are your suggestions? Choose a career into coding or technical side only or go into other roles like technical functional ,product owner etc.

Your question should be Layoff irreplaceable?

Go with a mentality that company can anytime fire you, so it’s better to get a T shaped qualities which will help you in grabbing fastest and best opportunities in worse situations

Here a SWE or SDE or any technical role per se have a more weight, the numbers of engineers working for a particular product is more hence dependency is more , but in a stakeholder management job like PM, PO, Scrum Master they are 1 for the product but if product has nothing much to discover that person might get laid off

And lastly it’s purely on companies intent, market situation, politics in company that is being in that group which are influenced with higher roles

Hence a person needs to develop skill set which have higher or more number of volume of openings, and also create some products of own try to monitize and get more connections

If you are a student, stick to SWE

Starting with SWE can give you broad idea of hands on in coding. Helps you with logical thinking too. This may be contradictory but its just my opinion

There is one basic rule that has stood the test of time
“Humans will create products that human will consume” no AI is disrupting the how and who creates this product but for a good 25-30 years humans will be the buyers and decision makers
With that contexts - understanding technology (refresh after every 4-5 yes years) + business (how to sell, develop customer relations, make profit, invest and raise capital) + human psychology (needs, wants desired.) wrapped around decent IQ and astounding EQ will any day make leads of money either as employee or employer

You need to be part of revenue generating or value generating team
It could be SWE for a product or service or a Growth PM for a levels headed team.

Wealth creation always trumps the jargons.

When the hype of GPT settles down people will understand that GPT will make money only if you information or knowledge that your competitor does not have.

Also why the open AI is becoming more of closed AI in silos. Though AIs also will use game theory to arrive at solutions.

Depends you see if you do MBA from IIM etc no layoffs for you. If you’re good at coding you’ll not be laid off. But it’s also dependent on company’s health. Many good devs very let go at very good companies coz the companies ran off of funds
