Had my appraisal meeting with the manager today and the feedback I received don't put me in a good light. The manager wants me to be more proactive and ask for more work. In the last 2 years more than half of my team has quit for whatever reasons and even with the increased workload that I completed on time, I have received a rating of "partially achieved". What's even weirder is that the rating was given before the appraisal meeting even started. The manager had made up their mind. I see the market and feel grateful for a relatively safe job and a relatively fine package but this event makes me feel under-appreciated at work. My team lead still treat me like a fresher even though I have 2+ yoe and assigns high priority tickets to other team members. Given the fewer complex tasks in my bucket, the manager feels I'm not up to the task which is far from truth. I want to make a switch and move on to better opportunities before long but I am worried whether this merit report will sour my chances when the HR asks for them during interviews / onboarding. Have you had similar experiences? What did you do? Also, am I wrong in being worried about the appraisal report affecting my chances at new companies? TL;DR: Does a rating of "partially achieved" impact chances when applying to new jobs?

I need some good advice. I have been working on a very weird project for past two and half years now. This project has not at all being in a proper way and feels like a classic case scenario of sucking up to clients to keep the business with them. But in this conundrum, I am suffering A LOT. My core working areas are SSIS and SQL Server and I have been trying expand my skillset to cloud platforms like Azure engaging in some proper Data Engineering roles. But I have been sole contributor in my role in this project and inevitably a very heavy dependency developed upon me over time and now the management is not willing to involve me in any project other than this. I have been trying to get some opportunities laterally but since I have no hands-on experience in my "preferred skillset", no one's willing to consider. I tried talking to my managers and I keep hearing "It's a good thing that you have developed such good rapport with the customers" (which I have), "this project will end soon and you will get better opportunities once we close this project", "we will consider you for on-site opportunities". None of these promises have been fulfilled. I realized very late that I have just been exploited since I have been doing at least a three man job in the billing of one and they keep extending me on the project. Accolades are there but just on mailers and that too from customers, not my managers. To add insult to injury when I received customer appreciation no one from the management even bothered to highlight it internally and they didn't nominate me for H1B unlike they promised. There is no incentive of any type- bonus, better project or onsite opportunities and I am struggling to find jobs within or outside the organization because of current market scenario and lack of experience. I am getting restless thinking about this and the time I am losing on this worthless project. There seems to be a huge disconnect between HR, management and employee. What to do???

Do not join TCS at the early stage of life with a low salary with expectations that it will grow after a year or two as promotions are very slow. If you are getting a role with a salary up to the mark go ahead but the promotions and hike totally depends on the project. As I know the hike at TCS is between 2% to 5%. Also promotions do not depend on your performance, even if you perform outstanding you might end up getting a 2% hike. Not worth it right. Promotions totally depend upon your behavior with your TL and manager. Even if the person does not work but does the chamchagiri of them it works. Once the project you are working in RAMPS Down the RMG people helps to ruin your life after that. RMG in Tcs needs proper training to allocate the manpower to proper process.

I have been getting a feeling that software engineers (SEs) have a sense of entitlement, believing they deserve a salary of 50-60 LPA with 2-3 years of experience and a 30-40% raise every year. As an SE myself, I believe this sense of entitlement leads to unrealistic expectations in the workplace and hampers actual output. Past nine months have been brutal, with mass layoffs and minimal or no increments. Due to this I have noticed people putting minimal effort into their work. I understand that getting no appraisal can be demotivating(trust me I do) but considering what we are paid for what we do is just insane(I am comparing with other industries). With funding becoming scarce, many companies are no longer burning through cash. Most Indian companies will prioritize profitability to secure further funding rounds or pursue an IPO. Since engineering teams account for a significant portion of expenditures, everyone will be looking to cut costs by any means necessary. What are your thoughts on this situation? Do you still give your 100% even if you didn't receive a raise but are being well compensated?"

Looking for genuine and non diplomatic answers since it will be anonymous. It is upto you to reveal the name of the company you resigned from. Lets discuss!!! I will go first - I quit my last organisation (a famous UPI company) in 2020 because, they still are in old technology. No cloud computing, no kubernates, no terraform. Their entire baremetal infra are in 2 DCs (Mumbai and Bangalore). Leadership ideas are outdated. I was very much bored and looking for a change.

It has almost been 18 months since I have joined TCS. I was on the bench for a total of 5 months in the beginning, and finally got a project. I went to the office and my manager told me that it would take few days for document verification and security clearance. I was coming to the office daily but had nothing to do. I was getting anxious since I was just watching Youtube videos for almost a month. I wanted WFH but when I asked they said I had to come to office even if I had no work. Finally, I got a KT from someone working on the project. I came to realise that I was doing work that even a 9th class student can do. The problem? 5 people were doing this work. The problem? I was working 30 minutes a day. I had to come early to the office, login using my seniors login creds and do timepass work. I have to send an email to our point of contact at the client side that the work is done at the end of the day. I have learnt nothing here. I feel that these companies are just too inefficient. I am planning to leave ASAP now. I have learnt nothing and I am scared that I will not find another job because I have the Years of Experience but no skills. This is how IT companies destroy your career. Now I am doing DSA to get into another company.

Sometimes I feel that the work I am doing in the office is worthless. It is providing no value to the client nor does it help me. I am able to answer the technical questions of the client which help in their business decisions and I think that's what keeps me employed. But I still feel I am wasting my time and I really don't know what I should do. Does anyone else face a similar issue or is it only with me? Also have someone come out of this and would like to share their experiences.

I am preparing for the Staff engineer role. Have put my resignation without any offer in hand due to being highly underpaid, no recognition towards my high-value work, poor management, toxic work culture and work-life balance. I lose all my motivation to study gauzing at the things I am yet to study for the interviews. I don't want to settle with another mediocre company and stay under paid just like today. At the same time I don't have any monetory reserve to feel safe on financial side. Please help me with your words and past experiences of being in a similar situation.

I myself am a Software dev with more than ten years of exp. I mentored a bunch of folks and was active in lot pf communities. I have been noticing this trend for more than couple of years about how freshers and developers with experience of less than two three years are aggressively looking to switch companies to target 30L or 50L or whatever they are currently looking for. But I feel this is really bad for future in terms of career growth. I am not against looking for the best offer, but I feel people recently don’t have any priority for career growth. I am trying to understand their perspective. I am not jealous of any of these. Heck I prefer that they get more, so that they have to increase my pay to keep up with current trends. It’s just when people ask me for career guidance I don’t want to sound like a jerk to prioritise good work over good pay. Can you guys share your inputs/perspectives?
