[FRESHER] Startup vs TCS Digital: Which Offers Better Career Growth and Future Opportunities?

Hi everyone,

I’m a recent graduate and currently have two job offers: one from a US-based startup led by Indian founders and another from TCS. I need some guidance to make the best decision. Here’s my situation:

  1. Startup: • Offers flexibility and independence, but has no social presence or corporate structure—no tools like Jira, leave portals, or scrum meetings, just BitBucket and Excel files. • The work environment is very basic, with minimal processes. • There’s a 2-year bond, and breaking it will cost around 1.3 lakh (~1.5 months’ salary).

  2. TCS: • Provides a well-structured environment, established processes, and tools. • I believe it has more brand value, especially in the corporate world.

Main questions:

  1. From a career perspective, which company will give me better future opportunities and offers? Does TCS have more value compared to a startup with no social presence?

  2. I’m currently working as an iOS developer, but I don’t want to stay in this track for the long term. I want to transition into fields like web development, Java, or Python in the future. If I stay in iOS for 2 years, will it limit my ability to shift to a new tech stack later?

  3. Overall, which company should I choose based on growth, learning, and future opportunities?

Your advice will help me a lot. Thank you!

Go for tcs as no bond here in tcs you can leave or join when ever you want.

It's not simple as that if you go into a comfort zone then it's hard to get out. And product based startup is way more better than service based like TCS.. if you really want to be technically best.

Chose a Startup over TCS. YOU'LL LEARN NOTHING IN TCS TRUST ME.

About tech stack no other environment will help you learn more technologies than startup ecosystem.

Processes in Service based IT firms is nothing but show off. They don't follow it with integrity. And it's less of an important trust me. Everything is crisis management at the end.

Don't be scared, choose the startup thing. And also demand a bonus of 1.3 Lakh for the Bond. You make it a point that you are committing to the company it financially can help you too. The contract to be renewed based on what they offer. Else you can also negotiate about if you leave after 12 months 18 months and 24 months how much money is they plan?

Because it's also your first career and you are serious about it. If something doesn't serve your skills and interest money shouldn't be the reason to stay there it's like choking yourself.

Another thing, you can abscond if you don't like the job. Nobody is gonna sue you. I have don't that as fresher with a company and nothing happens they have better things to look at than running after 1.3 L with an employee.

Thank me later. :) Good Luck

I totally agree with this. I am working in TCS and this is almost 95% true.

Very rarely do Startups with Indian CEOs have a positive culture. Better to keep a bit of your sanity and work at TCS while you grind for a Job switch or Higher studies

Select TCS, getting selected in tcs is the good thing that hapend in ur life. Never lose such a top company offer. And working in strtup with bond and no social connection is wasting ur time in ur life.My advice is choose TCS my frnd

Don't select TCS if you really want to grow technically.. as a fresher accept challenges in start-up you will learn much more in 2 years as much 5 or more years in TCS.. and these 2 years e.g. will lead you in top in upcoming years.

If you are technically sound and want to grow more, DON'T join TCS. In TCS you will meet people that don't even know how to do basic things like even copy-paste.
Take my advice- do join any other organisation at early stage of your career. I would suggest to join product based first. Because there's nothing in these service based companies. Their manipulative policies, work culture, growth perspective, salary hikes, everything you will hate. P.S. this was my experience working at TCS for almost 6 years.

Go for startup if you’re willing to work hard and don’t want to be in comfort zone. Also remote option is there in startup, that is again a plus at-least for me.

Things may differ based on you personal situation and family responsibilities. Are you married or planning to. There are so many parameters which only you know.

Take everybody’s advice and decide what you feel is best for you.

Both companies have their own pros and cons

Good time to join an early stage startup as a fresher?

I'm currently a SWE intern at a Series A startup (loss making) and they have offered me a full-time role. They have 2 years of runway.

I also have an offer from a very recently funded seed stage startup (pre revenue) with the same runwa...
