Generalists career path
Hey folks, recently have found myself on career crossroads. Not sure what kind of career paths generalists have after certain YoE. Are there some generalists on the platform with more than 6-7 YoE who can throw light on what kind of roles are available to generalists after a certain level? Ideally, would want to look at big tech cos.
Current profile: 5yrs post mba work ex in consulting + startups.
Find new problems to solve. There's no end to this imo.
Yes, that's fair. However, i have started feeling inept as i have no skills in specialized functions and whenever i see job opportunities, they are mostly catering to specialized functions with specific skills. I am fearful that the train has already left the station and i have not onboarded one.
Founders Office/Chief of Staff , Product Management , Head of New Initiatives/strategy.
Have done similar roles already. Chief of Staff is mostly a placeholder position for 1 or 2 years and then you are supposed to move into a vertical function. That decision is where i am getting stuck at
Stay in consulting. Move outside India as it's easier to become a partner. Come back when you are a partner.
Didn't like consulting and didn't feel it was a long term fit :/
Although my experience is much lesser than you like will complete 4 years next month or so. I think the path leads to a partner / co-founder / founder. Bcoz you need to do everything on those positions. When I started I was basically a marketer not so good, became very good after 2 years. Later launched few projects two were hit. Also developed a lot of tooling and software made money trading started a hedge fund with previous exits money. Now run many startups also have invested in some startups and help them with development marketing or even if they need HR.
