Good people of Grapevine: What's the nicest thing you've done for someone? (family/friends/a stranger) šŸ€

Write about a time you made someone feel very nice. Hopefully it can be a collection of ideas that others can take forward. If somehow a few people do something nice as a result, that would be powerful.

To start with an example: Bought a laptop for my grandfather because he wanted to continue working post 60. Helped him learn Excel, Gmail, Chrome browsing over many days. He really picked it up, and works as a consultant for new companies in the industry he worked all his life.

You know its the small things that you do everyday that matter - giving your staff an off when they ask and not cutting their pay, feeding stray animals, quietly paying the bill when you know the other person is struggling financially, not haggling with street vendors for 100rs (when youā€™re paying 800rs to eat popcorn in PVR), changing the topic of conversation when you realise someone is feeling uncomfortable yet cannot say in front of othersā€¦ we all need high empathy skills šŸ™šŸ»

Still in the process of loving oneself. Will get there eventually. I trust him

As Bapuji in TMKOC said, "Do a good work in such a way that if you do it with your left hand, even your right hand shouldn't know."

So, can't tell.

He meant - if you are helping others then don't brag about it to your friends and relatives, just help silently.

Yeah! I understand that, maybe I am wired this way but I don't want to tell this stuff even if anonymous.

We would have so many answers had you asked what someone did nicest thing to us, this one is difficult to recall (or not sure if we made as much impact in others life)

Just curious, what makes you think that the first part of your comment will have so many answers? I literally have none. :(

There are so many people who have done nice things for us, different sectors of life, no measuring the magnitude. You will have these stories, maybe your life currently is swamped with too many things

During a competition, I met someone who had a genuine passion for further studies. After meeting him a few times and sensing his sincerity, I decided to step in and cover his first year's fees, knowing it would make a difference for him.

Which he returned with his first pay-check! :) Now his pay-checks are more than me!

Staying with my friend during his lowest and the best times. Sometimes, that's all one needs: someone to listen to their story when they are alone and want to share their achievements or sorrows.

It's quite underrated but can be incredibly meaningful.

Hmm, there's a bit more -

  1. Fought for my mother to be treated well by my relatives during her periods(she was being discriminated against and made to sit separately)
  2. Supported my friend through an emotional breakup
  3. Helped a friend across every little thing in her life without even her asking me (Yes, I was(could be that I still am) in love with her)
  4. Mentored my juniors and they still remember me fondly and walk across with head held high
  5. Some materialistic things for my parents like - gifts, business class tickets, 5 star hotels, luxury airport transfer etc
  6. In my younger years like 6th-7th std - I was so naive that I used to be the nice guy who helped everyone. I used to help a girl out bcoz I liked her(top of the division she was), turns out she was just using me(I ended up devastated)
  7. Helped old people with crossing the road, carrying their bags etc
  8. Donated money for a young baby girl for operation of her heart from my pocket money (gotten from here and there and saved) when I was young. Also visiting old age and children ashrams - spending time with them, donating one meal
  9. Listened to people for hours and hours( I am indeed a great listener) and their problems
  10. Always left big tips for waiters with decent services. Same goes for chauffers/guides, maids
I know these are no way close to be considered nice(pretty common stuff) but I don't have much friends in my life and I don't think I have done anything better than this that I remember.

Can't just pick one though, all these, however insignificant brought smile to my face and I can't say which brought a better one (probably the one I did for the woman I love(d))
