How can I move from support to SDE?

Is it possible to start a career as SDE after 9yrs of experience in System Administrator?

I have started learning Java. Will it be useful to land a job in software development.

If yes, what will be the position SDE1 or it depends on the total experience, no matter what the previous work is?
