Hmm, negotiation works best when you have leverage.
You need to guage following things -
-
Did they approach you or you did. If they did, you have a higher leverage
-
How much that org pays for your kind of work for the level you are getting hired for
-
How good were the interviews. In other words, how desperately do they want you!
-
How much less interested are you in them. In other words, will you go with them for whatever offer they throw at you(you are desperately trying to leave your current org)
-
How many offers you have in hand? That's your leverage pro max!
-
You never never give out your last drawn salary. You in the 1st round, ask what's the max salary offered for the role, and then you say if that's something acceptable. If you show your cards, you lose your leverage
Based on all these things, you negotiate.
Now, ofc, if the company is someone who cannot Pay you the salary you ask, there's no use of other points. Hence, focus on getting into orgs which pay top comp.
I hope this helps.
P.S - I am in introvert too. But I have been able to negotiate great pay and showed middle finger to orgs who say they'll provide hike based on last drawn salary! And I am not even from IIT
