How do you negotiate when you are being low balled ? (SDE)

I have been interviewing and fortunately got 2-3 offers but everyone is low balling. One of the recruiters laughed when I said 100% hike and then made me feel like I am not worth it.

Being an introvert I have never been good with communication skills and negotiating is another game.

So how do you people negotiate what keywords, sentences do you prepare and keep for such moments?

Some context: I am from IIT with 3+ yoe and my friends are at almost 100% higher package, so I am also seeking the same. I have been up-skilling my self from almost a year.

Hmm, negotiation works best when you have leverage. You need to guage following things -

  1. Did they approach you or you did. If they did, you have a higher leverage

  2. How much that org pays for your kind of work for the level you are getting hired for

  3. How good were the interviews. In other words, how desperately do they want you!

  4. How much less interested are you in them. In other words, will you go with them for whatever offer they throw at you(you are desperately trying to leave your current org)

  5. How many offers you have in hand? That's your leverage pro max!

  6. You never never give out your last drawn salary. You in the 1st round, ask what's the max salary offered for the role, and then you say if that's something acceptable. If you show your cards, you lose your leverage

Based on all these things, you negotiate. Now, ofc, if the company is someone who cannot Pay you the salary you ask, there's no use of other points. Hence, focus on getting into orgs which pay top comp.

I hope this helps.

P.S - I am in introvert too. But I have been able to negotiate great pay and showed middle finger to orgs who say they'll provide hike based on last drawn salary! And I am not even from IIT

Thanks this is quite helpful.
For some context, after each round of interview the recruiter said that everything is positive and no negative feedback. And when it came to discussing offer she said “they were not good enough to give you <number> !!!!”

Depends upon what your current salary is? Whats your CTC?

Be confident mate. That could solve almost 75% of problems. And remember, you cannot go sell diamonds in a slum.

That’s another question how to gain confidence.
