How much do Indians earn?

ITR filing in India shows interesting data when compared with 2014vs 2024

4x jump in 1Cr+ bracket Nearly 5x jump in 50lacs+ earners 6x increase in 20-50LPA 6x jump in 10-20LPA 6x increase in 5-10LPA range But a meagre 2x jump in 2.5 to 5LPA And surprisingly a drop in 0-2.5 LPA

An Indian earning 10LPA+ puts him in top 1.5% Indians 🤯

Data suggests overall increase in earnings but higher concentration at top end salaries. Although the base has widened, but significantly slower compared to top range, suggesting concentration of wealth

  • The apparent growth in higher bracket is partially inflation driven

Considering the 6-7% inflation and 8-10% annual increments, doubling of income in 10 years adds up. But that should come up to 2x increase rather than 6x increase in high income. So inflation does have a contribution, but higher investments in certain sectors and more businesses making money should lead to higher income. Absolute numbers for extremely high income may seem small, but considering the wide gap, its a significant jump

Being in top 5% or 10%, I feel blessed.

Recently I came across a report in ToI that said earning 80 K per month puts you at top 4% in India. Assuming that the stats is true, do you feel contended with what you earn?
