It will be very difficult path for an engineer but here are few ways

  1. Start connecting with VC Analyst over coffee chats, chat with them, befriend them. VC firm run on a partnership entity, it’s not a company, so itself a close community, someone has to vouch for you.

  2. Post these chats, pick a sector and write your investment thesis, find startups that you would like to fund in that space and write memos basically why do you want to fund those startups. Ideally your thesis should match with funds investment principles.

  3. Check for openings with Analyst/ Associates. Send your thesis to those people and prep for interviews.

Hi thanks for the exhaustive reply, I was thinking about writing memos or investment thesis on LinkedIn, would you suggest being anonymous and posting the links on substack or medium? Don't want my current employer to think that my mind is elsewhere? What would you suggest?

I would suggest you write on substack/medium and post about it on LinkedIn. It will give you visibility among the VC community.

Investment thesis is just your take on what you think about the business. I don’t think your employer will think you are switching jobs, it would be more like you are analysing and posting your views.

Being anonymous won’t help. Also, VC is a job of 14-16 hours, it’s not all hanky dory, you don’t advise founders or seat on board seats. Most of the time you are just researching or sourcing and convince the partners to invest(very high scrutiny). It’s a lonely job, so be very sure to invest time.

It will almost take 6 months of hard work to get into it

how is that a job? it’s a business. you’re investing your money on startups in hopes of big returns.

or is there a vc role in firms where you invest firm’s money on potential unicorns(gamble someone else’s money) and get paid for it?
