Irrelevance of MBAs

With over 230,000 MBAs entering the job market every year, just holding the qualification is not potentially a competitive advantage now,” said Anil Ethanur, cofounder of Xpheno. “Skill specialisation is now the word for business and non-business grads alike.”

Yes, but MBAs come with a huge cost to company, particularly the top IIMs. If you are specialised as a general management post graduate, it may get tougher going ahead.

But top IIM grads don't face these issues. They are hired for their ability to deliver in time constraints and pressure, not just knowledge. That can be gained via internet also but not inherent abilities

All degrees are irrelevant. Only skills are relevant.

All skills are becoming outdated quickly. Only ability to learn is relevant

How to measure ability to learn (“smarts”)

Option 1: tough option- do rigorous tests.
HR takes risk here if candidate turns out to be bad

Option 2: easy option - let top schools be the filter and just hire from there HR takes lower risk. No one will fault them for hiring from IIM/ ISB etc

Guess what HR is gonna do?

If we have the budget, anyone will hire from the IIMs. When I have 10 other competing priorities and the IIMs have done a good job of filtering, then I'll happily pay and get it over with, instead of trying to set up my own expanded filtering mechanism.

If your business is not generating enough cash flow to hire people then maybe it’s too early to get MBAs . They’re needed only once you have scaled

All degrees are relevant. Don’t fall into these statements. If India has to grow to 10 trillion economy in next 10 yrs (and will mostly happen), there will be a need to a lots of educated n trained labour force.

We have overpopulation in arts, MBA, Engineering and dental degree grads. Untill we have a self employment ecosystem, this is going to get worse.
