HR guy here. Diversity hiring is not a quota system as perceived, it was started because people of merit are overlooked BECAUSE they are from minority. Diversity hire is not meant for hiring just women-trans-blacks etc. it means making concerted efforts to hire from these groups AND have required quality in work & exp. For example, chennai companies hire mostly Tamilians and Telugu folks and steer away from northies, and vice versa in north many times. This is only one type of overlooking diversity.
Purpose of diversity hiring is to improve variety and depth of thought in business decisions WITHOUT compromising quality. It’s not to just hire women or other folks in quota system. Whole purpose gets defeated because you cement your own bias when you see poor hires in the name of DEI and actual deserving folks from those groups face more friction. It’s poorly done all over - india & abroad, startups and corpos but poorest execution is in tech.
