Is it normal to ask for reference before offer letter?

I have been offered a full time software Engineer role at x company verbally now the recruiter is asking me to give the contact point of my colleagues and manager so that they can have a feedback on me.

What should I do ? Is it normal when you are making switch as an experienced candidate?

Before the offer is uncomfortable since you mostly haven't resigned at that point. But yeah, some companies do that.

Should I talk to my manager?

Do you have other offers in the pipeline or only this one?

You can deny. You can share the contact of your trusted friend/colleague who knows about you switching. When they ask about manager contact details, you deny by being honest that it would not go well at this point of time.

If you can't make honest conversations with the people in this org then what's the point?

Yeah I will talk to the recruiter and make my point clear to him.

Reference for previous employers is ok Current employer/manager can be denied , no problem in that .it’s the norm for obvious reasons and hiring company should respect that
