Is MS from Us/Canada/anywhere worth it?

I have a strong passion in tech. I’m almost a nerd. The thing is, I never wanted to study the conventional indian way and therefore I don’t have a good academic record. 10th : 8.8 gpa 12th: 71 % Joined a civil course even though i loved tech, regretted and moved to another university after completing 2 years of civil. Completed graduation with a degree in ECE and an 8.1 GPA due to covid.

My professional record is quite average with a 12.65 LPA offer as an SDE, 1 YOE.

The thing is, I crave money. The current market situation and the opportunities available currently does not seem decent for me to switch and get a 20~30 LPA job.

Therefore I am considering higher studies. I need some advice from people who have been there and done that.

Yes, it’s worth it. But remember you’ll be stuck in the F1/CPT/OPT/H1B/GreenCard loop.

My plan is to maybe work there for 2-5 years, earn enough and then come back to india. Get a decent 30 LPA job in india and increase my source of passive incomes.

Sounds good till you’re there tbh. You’ll get used to the US and seldom come back.

Did it took u 6 years to complete b-tech?2 in civil 4 in ece ,all to do a tech(cs) job?

No, this was not because I wanted to do a tech job. I completed my education because I didn’t want to give up which taught me the importance of formal education.

And no, 2 in civil, 3 in ECE. I took 5 years.

Tech is just something that I enjoy. I would have ended up in tech either way.

12.65 is average these days 🥲

Also go for it only if you can afford it. MS and CoL is getting very expensive in the US especially. And there will be visa lottery issues few years after getting the degree.

Folks I know had hoped to pay off education loans within 2-3 years, but now it looks like it’ll take over 5 years 🙃

Yes.. looking at my friends who were able to score a 20+ LPA and even 40 LPA job easily, just because they had a decent academic record, I feel that I do deserve more. But since most of the engineers first job is around 5-6 LPA, I can’t put my dis-satisfaction of getting a 12.56 LPA job more strongly.

Right now, I’m not sure whether MS from US is a good ROI.. that’s why I’m considering looking for alternate countries where masters -> job would be a good ROI. What do you think?

Getting an offer was not difficult for my batchmates. But it gets difficult when you join a company thats so toxic that you’re willing to settle for lesser pay elsewhere. Employees get humbled when layoffs happen so I think its a good thing. If you’re good at what you do then people make adjustments around you.

My previous university is one of the best private universities from south india. Getting good offers was easy there. But a lot of people either resigned or got laid off because they did not meet the company’s expectations.

Good coders thrived and are now getting 40 LPA with 2 YOE
