Life is so unpredictable :/

My wife works in a leading private bank as a Deputy Manager (front desk)

A fraud happened in May 2024 where the fraudster came to the branch and tells ‘Can you please let me know the charges on my account xyz’

My wife by mistakenly without asking any govt ID, told him the charges and the fraudster saw the account balance on the screen. That’s how the sitting arrangement is maintened in the bank.

The fraudster then went to a different branch and successfully withdrew Rs 5lac using that cheque.

The cheque was also forged but the bank employee didn’t properly check and cleared it.

The customer later filed FIR on the bank and bank gave back the amount to the account holder. They didn’t catch the fraudster.

Later in Sept, my wife got an email where the committee wants to know what actually happened in the case and they opened a committee.

All proceedings, video conferencing got completed in Nov-Dec and we thought the case is closed since she has not done anything so wrong.

But then yesterday the ethics and code of conduct committee taken a disciplinary action against her and THEY DISMISSED HER from her job.

Bank said that in this case they will not provide relieving letter to her and only experience letter will be given. Why it is so concerning is because in banking industry, without relieving letter none of the big banks like ICICI, HDFC etc will provide you the job.

Now in order to work, she has to take a step back and work in NBFC or local company with lower paycheck. It all looks so easy but in reality when you face it becomes too tough to accept it.

In her 9years of total service and around 3years with Axis bank, she has not done anything unethical. And suddenly out of nowhere they have jeopardised her career in seconds, whereas the folks who cleared the cheque and other people were just given a warning and no action is taken against them.

All of her seniors like Cluster Head, Circle Head, no one care to help. What kind of senior management is there, who can’t even help their teammate when she needs them the most.

We all know that there is no point in fighting this legally. There are 100s of applications already there in court and justice is still pending for years. We will be screwed both in terms of money and time

Everything changed with his one decision. We were planning to start a family, vacations, our Anniversary was in coming month and there is utter silence in the room.

This confident hardworking woman is so depressed now and I feel so miserable that I cannot do anything.

Now we realised why elder people says ‘Private waalo ka kya bharosa kab nikaalde’

I really wish this bad time pass in coming months and things get back to normal.

I don't understand how someone can give me my account balance without even verifying my identity?

He said it’s his account and he simply wants to know the bank charges for cheque withdrawal. Under good faith it happened.
And if by mistake someone tells it then also the punishment should not be termination from banking industry. You terminate the employee from your bank but not from others. You destroyed the future of that person.

Not sure if you tell this if the money is yours.

I think she is being made a scapegoat

Man, the banking sector has got to be the most toxic, soulless, gut-wrenching industry ever. All my uncles work in banks. They're in senior positions themselves, but it doesn't matter. The person above you will cuss at you, humiliate you, belittle you, and you can't do anything about it. They often have huge parties in five-star hotels, almost every month. But the very next day, they pull everyone into a meeting and grill them about how many goals they have to reach. There's also a lot of corruption and favoritism, it's everywhere, but in the banking sector, it's the worst. I was so shocked to hear all this.

@WandererEmployee I would suggest you get in touch with someone who is a retired banker or a very senior banker willing to help you in this regard as there is no problem in fighting it out,no one is asking you to go to the court.

You need to create some pressure on these people and make the guys who passed the cheque party to this thing so see where it goes.... If nothing else fight for her dignity and proper relieving letter so that the impact on her banking career is at its minimum.

Giving out account balance is not an offence...passing a cheque with forged signature is and the bank paid the client which is again their lookout, as they would have refused if the signature has matched and the onus of the fraud would partially come to the client who's cheque was used .....how did someone got hold of the cheque leaf and knew how the client's signature looked in the bank account.

There is too many red flags in this, and someone else at fault. you need to fight on the technical aspects and your wife has a strong case. Good luck 🤞🏻

Everything happens for good. Take it in your stride. Maybe its a sign for her to take a stepback and think of an alternate career choice. Maybe an industry switch where people are more empathetic and better WLB. As a husband, you can encourage her to explore options and not make her feel miserable about not having having a job or not able to contribute in finances.

That’s true. Everyone is there for her support. She also understands that’s it’s better to change industry and start from there. It will take time to get up but in the long run it’s gonna help.

If the only information that he got from your wife is the account balance, how did the trail tie back to your wife? The fraudster could have gotten that information from anywhere. And the point of failure was actually at the check verification stage.

Are you sharing all the details with us?

My dad worked in the banking industry for a very long time. Here are few things to note. Whenever there is something wrong, only the lower rung people will get fired or people without crucial information about wrong happenings in the bank.

Your wife must have been an ethical person, and wouldn’t have “pehchaan”. Hence, she was made the scapegoat.

I am sorry that this happened. But, the next thing would be to move on.

But before that, just check with some senior person in the banking industry(legality) of working without relieving letter at NBFCs. You never know if those folks at NBFC come back

I would say it's a generation gap. I asked for some sensitive info at my bank regarding my holdings with the bank& they never asked me for proof of identity. No one's mistake but the weak/ who starts the problem gets prosecuted in a typical corporate setup. The teller could have not expected such things can happen to her. All she can do is watch her step going forward. But Frankly speaking, over authentication slows down the banking experience of customers. So it's hard to stick to the process always. Yes it's almost a nightmare. One quick query - did the bank fail to trace out the fraudster who made a fake cheque?

There’s no update on that. He is freely roaming around.

See you can argue all you want to but code of conduct was indeed broken as information was provided without verification. I have around 5-6 of my cousins who are in banking 3 of them in govt banks as PO they definitely ask for identity even if they know that account is yours. And in most cases a person always has their mobile with them and if they were that insistent and you have maintain the relationship. Install the Axis Bank app on their phone as thats the best way to advertise and market the app. But anyways she should get the relieving letter off course don't know why they are holding it back. So no relieving letter means no employment termination? That means you can question it back in court?

No relieving letter means no entry in banking industry. Most of the org asks for relieving letter.

There was error on your wife's part and in banking you have to be very careful otherwise there are consequences. Even Govt employees face disiplonary action and even termination for such faults.

I agree that there is a mistake from her side. But it lead to serious repercussions which can be boil down to some extent. Holding a relieving letter is simply a torture with someones career.
