Looking for a job but said no to an assignment

Folks, I was in talks with a company for a role and they sent this assignment. I thought a lot and declined doing it because I found it to be abhorrently long and painful to complete.

Did I do the right thing or should I have considered doing it? I don't want to think that I acted as smartass.

I changed the name to maintain anonymity.

GPT or Any other tool can help you build this instantly if you use right prompt.

It can give you the outline. You just have to invest some hours tweaking it in my opinion.

If you want any/this job badly then you have to. If you are not in hurry, then you can choose not to do it. No harm.

Yeah, I don't like my current job but not in a desperate state. Plus this company wasn't that good.

I also got such kind of things, I also didnt do it. However, I did for a company where I actually wanted to go.

Do the assignment but don't give access to them. Do not hand over to them free work. Say you want to present on call, or host it on your website/ portfolio

Clearly the company was not juicy enough for you. So it’s ok. Dnt make the same mistake for a good company. Research well on a company before choosing to shit on it.

Agree. It was not. But I would have joined them nevertheless to escape my current org. But the assignment squeezed any excitement.

TBH doesn't seem like a long assignment, I have seen and done much longer and painful one's.

I understand where you are coming from, maybe take this as a sign that you really don't want to work for this company/sector.

For future, try giving the assignments a shot specially if the role and pay is good. Even if you don't send it in, it'll give you good practice.

Ignore such tedious. Assignments should be like assignments not MBA projects.

@Gus My personal opinion- Hiring assignments, however close to the real work, are useless to the companies. Executing a project is much tougher and very different from a case study.

People doing real work know this and they don’t rely on such assignments to do their job.

Folks who rely on shady practices where they use assignments to do their jobs can’t anyway do real work.

So either way, the assignments are useless to the companies.

But assignments help you present complex ideas to your hiring managers which may not be effective if you communicate verbally.

Also it helps in structuring your thought process which will help you get things done during your actual job.

So, it’s better to do the assignment even if it’s painful.
