My CEO is Micro Managing Engineers 😡

Hi, I am working in a early stage startup and our CEO has established the culture of transparency where he shares every update regarding company funding, customer sales, revenue and answers all questions within company but one thing that has been bugging me is his micromanaging.

He has integrated a bot in slack which ask for what did you do yesterday ? and what are you going to do today ? , Everyday

He also managed a spreadsheet of our tasks and takes the exact estimate in days makes a calendar view there and keeps asking up to update on our tasks progress in multiple meetings or on chat.

I didn't had such experience in prior companies but he mentioned, such things were being followed in NyKa, DineOut, etc as well

Does the well known companies like Phonepe, Uber, Zomato, google, amazon, Microsoft, De shaw, sprinklr follow this as well ?

I just wanna check, is he doing too much or it this a standard in Indian companies ?

Thanks to all whoever reply to this post, please share your current & past experience.

Sounds like a daily standup update just in written format. Or am I missing something?

Yeah, it's that only. does Microsoft also ask it's employees to fill this on daily basis ?

Yeah, much better than standup in my opinion.

This isn't micro management. He isn't telling you how to do your job. He's paying you a salary to work, the least he can expect is you to hit your deadlines.

Not every reporting or question is micro management you idiot. Have you ever hired someone then not asked them how long it would take them to do something? 😒

Yeah, estimates are fine. We also meet deadline but is it not too much where he is expecting us to fill the what have we done yesterday and what are we going to do today on daily basis ?

No, it is not too much. Managers usually take care of these things, he's probably doing their job on his own to make sure things stay on track.

Again, try hiring someone and not asking them what they did/are doing. Most employees suck at keeping themselves accountable and on schedule.

Bhai kal kya kara aaj kya kara batane me kya dikkat hai agar kara hai toh.

Jo kara hai likhde, Same happens in my company, Bot integrated into slack. It’s pretty simple and makes standups easier to manage for managers. ( I am a IC btw )

Read about scrum mate, I don't think anything is wrong with what he is doing. Seems like your Engg lead is not strong or you guys have no Engg leads, hence the CEO is doing it.
Usually CEOs take updates from Engg leads rather than individual enggs, in a small setup, this is how you can do

PrancingDumpling

Yeah, we don't have eng leads.. it's pretty early stage startup.

that explains! If I was the CEO I would do the same

Op what you mentioned is not micromanagement. He is just asking for daily work status and time estimates are needed else how will they know time required to ship the feature. Also regarding updates, ceo will need those as he has to keep track of all the tasks going on in the company. This is standard everywhere and not just India.

Seems pretty standard. Daily standup meetings are a standard practice in most companies. Atleast you just have to write your daily update instead of wasting time on a call. This isn’t micro management

Bhai kam se kam timesheet to nahin bharni padti na.

Normal sa standup hain yeh to. You will also feel accountable ki tumne kya kiya kal aur aage kya karna rahe gaya.

This is a very basic thing and it is not micro management, it is to track the deadlines and performances. Every company do this scrum thing.

This is called standup in most companies. FFS stop having problem on everything. Feels like OP is Gen Z.

Think of it as not the CEO but your inner conscience asking. You ll be fine.
