Need help regarding Fit check round of interview

I recently started interviewing after a period of about 5 years and I am very surprised about the change in the way interviews are conducted these days. I have now interviewed for few companies like Sitetracker, Avance Clinical, Iron Mountain and expedite commerce and each organisation had their first round as a fit check round which i’m unable to clear. Can you guys share some tips around it.

Your description of fit check isn't clear. If you're talking about cultural fit, then be prepared to be disappointed because there are many companies having this as a round where there is going to be a clear mismatch between what the HR "wants" the culture to be versus what the actual culture is going to be working under your boss whoever that is.

Sometimes it's very easy to clear the culture fit round by the HR but the line manager whom you're interviewing is going to behave like an absolute jerk either during the process itself (lucky if this happens!) or once you join the organisation. This will eventually make you question the entire culture fit process.

Consider it luck or coincidence if you find both the cultural fit the organisation aspires to have and your boss showcasing the same. Easy to find this in smaller organisations but larger the size lesser are the chances.

The other obvious fit is the budget fit. They just call to hear out your current salary and never get back if it's outside their budget.

Hey thanks for the reply. You are correct, I have mostly been asked questions around salary and also questions on what my current roles and responsibilities after they describe the culture and role they are looking for. Its not a technical round as such coz for me this round has been conducted by HRs as well as Directors.

Here are some common things they can look for when you switch across industries or working styles. I'm just giving you a few observations from my discussions with HRs and consultants before who had reached out for similar roles.

  1. Moving from an MNC to Startup
  • does your work involve operating in fast paced environments
  • does your work involve multi-tasking
  • something that you pulled off real quick or saved huge money for your org
  • your ability to go beyond your JD and take up additional responsibilities
  • go-getter attitude
  • are you more process driven or goal driven?
  1. Moving from Indian MNC to an MNC based outside India
  • your ability to interact with colleagues across geographies. And how frequently do you collaborate with them?
  • any projects/work that you have done in the geography the new MNC is based out of
  • ability to work across shifts if you're remote

Haven't heard of any of the above companies and am also currently interviewing. By fit check do you mean the initial screening round wherein they ask generic questions on the projects we worked on?

I am working on Salesforce so you may have not heard about these companies. Yes I am exactly talking about this initial screening before scheduling the technical round. I have explained my role in minute details but I never seem to get shortlisted for the next round.

I would like to hear your views on these rounds and how do you go about it.
