Need your guidance on my career choice!

Hey Viners, I'm curious to know about the role of an 'Assistant Manager' would be at Maruti Suzuki R&D.

Being an Automobile Engineer with two y.o.e working as an Risk and Sustainability Analyst, what would my career look like?

My short and mid-term goals are to work in Product Development and be a Product Manager respectively.

My long-term goal is to earn money exponentially.

Any guidance and input would be appreciated!

I worked at a top Indian OEM. Big name. Historically significant. My 2 cents - Don't go by designation. In my OEm asstm manager is the lowest officer cadre. GETs after training join as asst. Manager. Usually that role is for 3 years and then they get promoted to manager. So people get designated as divisional managers with 10 yrs of exp. They will not be heading any division. People who head divisions usually get designated as AGM and above. That's executive cadre.

This problem is not just with manufacturing but also other sectors as well. If you have friends working in international banks like JP Morgan, smart street etc.. check with them every one is a VP.

We are a populated country so.changing sectors is very difficult. Not impossible but very difficult. So you get into manufacturing, the odds of getting back into any other sector is practically nil. You will hear about how your marketing head or finance head came from FMCg or wall street. They are anomalies. And such changes happen only at leadership level. Not at worker level.

Work life balance in the factory is worse than IT. If it's a corporate office that is different, usually better. Before joining manufacturing think harder, it usually a one way street. But in the longer run they are more stable and offer better living conditions than tech world.

Hey, thank you for the detailed info.

• I know the designation of AM is nothing (it's an entry level role).

• May be the learning part would be more and would it be possible to jump for Product roles in the same sector?

• I don't wish to change sectors, I want to stay in Autombile sector itself, and may be after getting a good two years of experience, I shall jump the ship?

• About WLB, I found that the working hours would be 9hr 45min. which is 45 min. more than I work currently. The WLB at my current organization is pretty chill. The only thing is confusing is the location at Maruti Suzuki, they said it'll be either Rohtak/Gurgaon RnD plant. They do have their corporate office in Gurgaon, but not sure where I would be posted.

• Also, it's bit hard for me to change my location from Bengaluru to Rohtak/Gurgaon (might work there for year or two and search for companies in BLR and come back?)

•Would it be a wise decision to join there? And may be after some years get into Product roles with the corporate kind set up?

Kindly help me out! 🙃
