Opinion: If you are doing MBA from tier 2 or below, you are just paying for the deg certificate

You can legit get that knowledge from youtube too, but companies won’t consider

P.S. I am from Tier 2 MBA so cant diss me

What's your conclusion then? Are you saying if people don't get Tier 1 MBA, they should drop their MBA plan or take huge loan and go abroad?

ZestyQuokka

Whoa I didn't say about going to abroad or take loans

But MBA is generic and Tier 2 or below don't put in much efforts to grow you as a person.
During MBA days I had friends from different Bschools, and the difference was evident

I see, so tier 1 colleges do anything different for anyone there to grow as a person? I thought the only differentiating factor was the kind of students who came to do MBA there!

Any degree has its value only to get first job . T1 guys get to work in a good role thereby that experience propels them further. Lucky T2 guys get a break thru and manage to go a little further. Beyond 2 years your MBA or any college degree has no value. The last job you did, the contribution of your role to the company decides everything. Beyond 10 Years, your role in the P&L of the company matters. You can have your entire learning thru youtube, If you had built a business or your contribution to the company will be known. You cant lie. College degrees are a waste of time, unless your degree is a legal requirement.

I disagree with that part. Our VP business, introduced himself IIM A and BCG, he was heading 100 people in startup Tier 1 degree goes on for life

CosmicLlama

He introduced "himself". T1 has a big advantage, no denial. They get a headstart in the race. But beyond a couple of years, the results speak for themselves. For eg -If you worked in a successful startup that scaled big, you chance of making it to the top increases multifold. T1 or T2 doesn't matter there. Your performance cannot be lied after a certain level. The information is open, people can find out.

Start ups will hire any from T1. because they are asked to. Him leading a 100 member or 200 member is immaterial. Remember even a certain fintech was headed by a shark tank guy was T1. If his performance was so good as he claims to be, he wouldn't be running betting apps.

College gives u the initial push up in terms of role and package. What matters after that is how u learn, evolve, adapt and grow, and tat is not correlated in any way to the name of ur college.

Don’t generalise. I graduated from the topmost IIM and I have multiple friends who graduated from Tier 2 colleges. I can say they went through Courses, experiences Etc., that helped them equally in personal and professional development.

They won Case comps in which ABC students participated as well - showing that they’re no less.

Yes, opportunities differ, but you can still end up getting 20+ LPA jobs (all my friends did), which was much more than what they would earn without an MBA.

You never know how a 2 year residential program might change you (personally + professionally), so don’t generalise.

This is true for all degrees out there

Yes, kind of people paying for degree cert coz I ve seen few of my team mates in Ops having done from Tier 2 and Tier 3 MBA colleges and working with us. But I ve never seen an Harvard/Stanford/IIT/IIM guys work in Ops. Folks in our company say, Alma Mater doesn't matter but subtly they promote / Mentor those folks who study at Top5 6 MBAs in India or Top30 MBAs in the world. Companies really never trust a tier 2 or tier 3 folks that easily.

Yep, from past couple of years it is like that! Either you study in top tier or dont do that degree.
There is no sense if you are in the middle. Either go all out or dont go!
