Resignation without actually having a offer letter in hand

Is it a good idea to resign and start serving notice if i am about to get an offer ? I mean, i already have one. I just haven't got the actual offer letter but the new company has started background check for which I have received the mail.

Many people ask this question. The answer they want to hear is usually - " it's fine, no worries".

This is not a one size fits all case. There is a whole lot of factors that are not in one's control. What if they never send the offer letter? What if they revoke before joining?. What if they fire after joining?

IMO, life of a salaried employee is like that of travelling in a train. Nothing is in our control. We assume that the travel will be nice and comfortable. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't.
