Building a startup
I am building a platform which would help aspirants get connected with peers and mentors to get guidance about their respective domains. How should I attract initial users?
Where you can connect with quality , relevant, legit mentors and ask career related queries. First call will be free and further calls will be paid. Do you think this kind of platform can work ? Will guidance seekers pay for career advice? I have my doubts .
Brilliant idea! But remember, even the tastiest samosa isn't free. Quality advice deserves a price. Now, how will you stand out in the crowd?
Thanks . Do you think advice seekers can pay? I have doubts
Yes they will.
Topmate competitor?
Have you used topmate ? If yes, any feedback?
Yes!
I will say it’s a WIP, gives more free time to mentors in arranging the sessions.
You want to reinvent topmate?
Haven’t checked topmate . But haven’t heard good things about it. Have you used it? What has been your experience?
@LetsGetLaidOff interesting how topmate is positioned. more towards the mentors than mentees..
Your idea is as useful as a chocolate teapot. Professionals don't need hand-holding. They need opportunities. Will they pay? Doubtful. What's your plan B?
As a professional - beyond a point it becomes repetitive and boring. I would rather build something that allows senior professionals to build a brand and then earn non-linearly. More akin to book sales than therapist.
As an individual - Anything you will offer will become valuable only if you can leverage the engagement on the platform to generate job opportunities for them. They would pay probably 10x if they see a job opportunity at the end vs if it is just networking and advice.
While the idea is great i.e. Connecting senior professionals to career seekers, business model probably needs to tweak a little
Brilliant idea! Indians love free advice and paid wisdom. Will they pay? Of course, if the mentor is worth their salt. Now, how will you ensure quality mentors?
But one thing which I have noticed after analysing lot of such mentorship platform is that, they are unable to scale and sustain just on this model as the mentors would be part time ofc if you want to attract good ones and mentorship as main value prop doesn't work well in india atleast, you need to have some better offering and mentorship can come as added offerings for long run. Most of them eventually shift to edtech based course offerings platform later
Preplaced is one such, you can check it out

Lets just say,
Hi everyone,
I haven't encountered any platform that provides end-to-end services for job seekers. If there were such a service, would you use it? If yes, how much would you be willing to pay for it? The goal is to help people who have ...
