Stuck Between PM & PMM

Hey all, I'm seeking some advice and guidance from this amazing community. I'm currently at a crossroads in my career and would appreciate any insights from those who have been in a similar situation.

For the past 12 years multiple domains like Business, Digital marketing, Ui Ux & digital transformation, lastly 1.5yrs back I had the opportunity to become a founder of a startup where I handled both product and marketing. Unfortunately, that venture didn't find PMF, but I gained valuable experience in the process.

Now, I'm considering whether to pursue a career as a product manager or product marketer.

Also i didn't borrow any salary from the startup will it have any negative effects & how to mitigate them?

Lastly based on the above background what would be the ideal package to go for?

I’d have suggested PM but you also mentioned 12 years experience. For such experience, the PM role you’re going to get would have a tough competition from both younger and older folks. However, in PMM, the experience you have might be useful. If you want to increase the odds of getting hired and maxing CTC, my suggestion is to go for PMM and then transition to PM if you’re able to prove competence and like the job.

Well. Razorpay is just one of the companies. With your experience, you can get in touch with much younger startups.

Both PM and PMM are kind of below your work ex. You can at least join as an SPM/GPM. Otherwise, you cab go for a senior role in Founder’s Office.

That's very kind of you, but my proof of work won't support that role

Which role you like more? Pmm is more marketing focused, pm is more product focused . Both roles are important but in my experience I have seen building a great product is the ultimate skill to have . There are enough marketers around .

I prefer building products, are they great? Still working on it, currently working on my product sense

Go for PM PMM -> PM is significantly harder than PM -> PMM I should know, i wanted to go PM for months now but can’t even land interviews… markets bad too but not even one call ;( Meanwhile PMs are preferred for PMM roles in many orgs

I understand where you're coming from but probably it shouldn't be that tough. Maybe try looking for a resume review

PM to PMM switch is significantly easier than making a PMM to PM switch, so I’d suggest go for a PM role now.

@Normix My take would be go for PMM role and eventually try to shift as PM internally once you proved your POV for that company. That way your salary , role and also competition wouldn’t impact much compare to current market where you want to search for PM role.
