"thank you for submitting your application"

"thanks for submitting your application ....." that's the text which i've been reading from more than one year without a single acceptance letter. but, finally i received confirmation letter from Amazon although for now L2 role but i will create something of it, i am certain of that now because now i know what's it been like being unemployed and facing rejections from so long that it's almost broke me from inside to the core. some people from grapevine referred me and some from linkedin. so, i'm very grateful for those people and thank you so much for that.

now, the thing which i would like to know from you all experienced folks here. it'll be my first job in-office kind of (because my first job was completely wfh and i was on bench after probation for almost 1 year and i left the organization without knowing the reality that i will be unemployed for more than 1 year after this).

i would like to know about the office culture and what it'll look like and what rules should i keep in mind before entering the office?

how should i connect with seniors for upskilling myself and learning important things about organization and keep stepping up the ladder?

what kind of dress code should i follow in amazon? if you have some good suggestions, please drop your suggestions because like i said my days for more than 1 year was inside one room and no interactions.

and what should i always keep in mind about work and life ?

also, if there are folks from chennai please suggest important things which i should know about the city, good places to eat and visit. and some important tamil words and how to learn it for getting adjusted in chennai which will help me along the way. i only know the word "vanakam" and

my "vanakam" to you all!

Congratulations man !! Great to hear about it !! πŸ₯³

Since this will be your first time in corporate office, a few pointers:

  1. Dress well formally and informally - Have some good plain and check shirts along with formal or casual pants. You can find good combinations over net for sure. Dressing up well sure boosts your confidence.
  2. Groom yourself well. Don't have to overdo things. Good cologne and a tidy lookup goes a long way.
  3. First rule of corporate - Don't trust anyone blindly. Everyone is here to learn and take care of their families. And so are you. So, look after yourself first. Mentally and physically, that's important. You will surely have colleagues and over time you could make some close friends (totally depends on time) but learn to wait and see.
  4. Keep your personal and professional things separate. Not everyone needs to know everything about you. Over time, you will understand how the people at corporate work and you will adjust to them accordingly.
  5. Observe your team culture. Try to learn from this experience and whenever in doubt, ask questions. There are no right or wrong questions.
  6. Learn to say NO. If you don't feel like a certain task couldn't be accomplished within a timeframe or you require help, ask it. I am not sure how Amazon's culture is, but yes for the mentioned point tell it to your colleague or reach to your PM.
  7. Rest over time you will learn how people and things actually work and who is doing with what interests. So, just keep your senses open.

Now, coming to the part that you will be moving to Chennai. Well I started my career from Chennai, so a few pointers there:

  1. Food: I am a vegetarian, so surely there are good options. If you don't have any problems with eating rice thrice a day, then surely it's not a problem. Since rice is almost main in their diet. If you like typical north indian food, there would be a restaurant serving north indian food as well, you just need to find it.

  2. Language: I couldn't understand anything till I was there. But yes, locals are helpful and they try to guide you. Just don't get into any quarrels or something, bcoz once they start speaking tamil, you wouldn't understand anything.

  3. Explore areas of pondichery, mahabalipuram, parts like nelllore, vellor and yellagiri are good, if get time go rameswaram as well. Within the Chennai City, there is lots to explore with marina, Elliot and other kind of beaches along with Iskcon, Ashtalakshmi and Kapaleshwar temples. There are some art galleries as well. So you will have plenty to explore.

  4. Humidity: the weather is kind of humid so you would prefer to have an AC room sharing PG. I think sharing a rented flat would be costly (at my time it was, since security was very high). So, connect with someone and get an idea of how the present situation of PGs and flats is.

That's all I can remember now. If anything you want to ask, sure can shoot it up here. All the best 😊

Firstly, congratulations πŸ‘
General advice, be open to learning, asking questions about your doubts. Don't hesitate. This will make your life easier. Talk to your seniors, go for breaks together, have lunch together. This will enhance your bonds with them.😊 Chennai is a good place, well connected by public transport and is quite cheap, especially the local train. I'm not from Chennai but have worked for some time there, and people are very helpful.
Explore the beaches and local markets. For places to eat, you'll need to find as per your taste.
